Ewa Who eventually killed Jess? I was hoping to the end that it wasn't Jacob. Her boyfriend would make sense.... Theo? Maybe when she caught him stalking on her he panicked and they had a fight and she accidentally hit her head and he left her there to die?? Jacob said that he found her in the bathroom floor all covered in blood - and I think that all Jacob has done is fell on a stairs so she left her tooth, but other than that - he used already dead Jess to create a crime scene, but he actually never killed her... I would bet for boyfriend or Theo...

Ree if I remember correctly, nobody killed her, it was an accident. Theo startled her and she slipped hitting her head. And Theo was already off without seeing that she had fallen down. When Jacob finds Jess he thinks Theo did kill her and sets up the crime scene to mislead the police to protect his brother (remember the house rules?).

Kathryn It was an accident. Thanks for adding the part about house rules reese...I never made the connection.

Sally I only finished reading it today but I didnt understand the ending. I get that nobody purposefully killed Jess but it didnt say what happened when they told the police about Theo breaking into the house. Theo and Jacob both broke the law so do you think that they were both sent to prison?

Wow, somehow I missed the moment when they have found out that Theo broke into the house...

If Jacob didn't kill her, then I believe he was released and there could be separate trial for Theo.... interesting...

It was right at the end, literally like the last few pages. I dont know about like laws in america because im from england :') but i thought that Jacob had broken laws by perverting the course of justice because he knew what had really happened but didnt tell anyone, im not sure.

Picoult likes to leave things to the imagination, and this is like a "choose your own ending" thing...in my opinion, anyway. In my ending...Jacob was given a different sentence for his intrusion and Theo had to answer and accept the consequences for the B & E.

Sally I hate open endings :') especially when the book was quite long, my copy was around 600 pages. After a week of reading it I'd expect to know how it ends, I was expecting another chapter or something :')

Kathryn Same here...after all that work (and getting through this book was a chore...I have the attention span of...ooh, look, a puppy!) to finish and she doesn't tell me what happened? Gah!

Sally I was exactly the same :') all the legal speak is confusing to me so I was skimming lots of it :') Picoults books all have really interesting plots but I usually feel let down when I finish them :/

Alexis Like someone said, Picoult leaves endings open on purpose so that readers can imagine their own ending. I like this about her work. This was especially appropriate for House Rules because of a comment made on her website. She said the book would end once Jacob proved his innocence. He did prove his innocence near the end so it makes perfect sense why Picoult chose to end it when she did.

Yes, that was how I interpreted the ending as well.

But wait a minute, weren't there choke marks around her neck? Weren't there bruises on her arms ?

Teressa I got the impression that they were from a fight with Mark, her boyfriend. Chapter 4, he admits to Rich Matson that they had a fight, he grabbed her arms and pinned her against a wall

~♡Nujaba♡~ It was Theo, but he did it by accident.

Edna Urwin It took me a long time to read House Rules. I stayed awake far too late and woke up far too early to have the time to read it. I longed to find out the result of the court case. Reading on my Kindle I thought: "It's a mistake, they've put in an earlier bit of the book at the end". Yet it wasn't a mistake, and I have to write my own ending. Oh, my, that's going to take me another long time! Edna, UK, 6th April 2017.

Edna Urwin On the plus side, every time I think I've read all the Jodi Picoult books ever written, there's always another one I find I missed earlier.

WelshGoddess04 Why did Theo go into the house that Jess was watching? Just curious because it does not exactly make sense:)

Near the beginning, he saw the family living in the house and wished that he could be apart of that atmosphere. He also stole a WII game from them. If i'm correct, Theo wanted to see if he could recreate the feeling of being normal, because he never really felt so with Jacob as his brother.

Margaret This was the most frastrating ending I ever read. Jacob didn't explain himself properly in court, infact he didn't kill her but it wasn't clear in his statement. But I'm thinking he was found guilty because when his mum was watching him sleep in the end she said ' why do I have the feeling this is goodbye' maybe it was a mother intuition ?
