Wow, somehow I missed the moment when they have found out that Theo broke into the house...
If Jacob didn't kill her, then I believe he was released and there could be separate trial for Theo.... interesting...

It was right at the end, literally like the last few pages. I dont know about like laws in america because im from england :') but i thought that Jacob had broken laws by perverting the course of justice because he knew what had really happened but didnt tell anyone, im not sure.

Picoult likes to leave things to the imagination, and this is like a "choose your own ending" thing...in my opinion, anyway. In my ending...Jacob was given a different sentence for his intrusion and Theo had to answer and accept the consequences for the B & E.

Yes, that was how I interpreted the ending as well.

But wait a minute, weren't there choke marks around her neck? Weren't there bruises on her arms ?

Near the beginning, he saw the family living in the house and wished that he could be apart of that atmosphere. He also stole a WII game from them. If i'm correct, Theo wanted to see if he could recreate the feeling of being normal, because he never really felt so with Jacob as his brother.
