Faith | 253 comments I read News of the World about a year ago and I also liked it a lot. The lack of quotation marks got on my nerves, so I haven't tackled any of her other books. My review:

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 496 comments Death by Darjeeling (A Tea Shop Mystery, #1) by Laura Childs Death by Darjeeling – Laura Childs – 3***
This is a good cozy mystery. I like how Childs took time to build the relationships among the tea shop’s employees, and other characters. There are plenty of suspects, and a couple of red herrings to keep the reader guessing. I’ll keep reading this series.

Brina Tomorrow, starting a historical fiction Chicken Dreaming Corn by Roy Hoffman that Diane alerted me to. About Jewish small business owners in Mobile on the eve of WWI. So excited to read this thanks Diane. Also starting a memoir of a true southern lady Sum it Up by Coach Pat Summit with a co-writer. I will have tissues handy.

I was told last week by a girlfriend that she has a friend that just named son Summitt. In Tennessee we have seen tons of Peyton's and Neylend's born and named after football. I think Summitt will be on the rise this year.

Brina What about Patricias? I have been a fan since high school. My claim to fame is that Tamika Catchings went to my school and I did the team's stats. Mind you growing up in Chicago the Bulls were champs but our high school girls basketball team was hot. Have loved UT women's hoops ever since.

Brina I heard the cutest story. A couple who are huge Cub fans almost as big as me decided to name their kids after the ball park. Their kids names are Addison, Clark, Sheffield, Grace, and Ivy. Back before I was religious I would have used Addison in a second. My kids have Jewish names; however, if the Cubs actually win this year, we are getting a dog and naming it Bryzzo.

Brina Seeing that The Last Night of Ballyhoo is doing lousy at the polls I went ahead and picked it up from the library. Only 98 pages so if anyone wants to read also I'd love to discuss with y'all.

John | 550 comments Off the bucket list, here I go following Mr Simpson's name sake. Doh

The Odyssey The Odyssey by Homer Homer

Odyessus hasn't come home from Troy. Is he dead or alive?

Suitors are camped out on his doorstep. Eating their way through the family's resources and livestock. They wish to marry his widow. (We know what they really want). I'm surprised they haven't drawn lots and started killing one another.

She's a tricky one though. Weaving by day. Unweaving by night.

Telemachus, his son, wants to kill them all. Athene tells him to go look for daddy. Give it a year then come back. She knows how to whisper in a young man's ear. Off he goes.

Living in California, I need a little help getting in the proper mood for autumn. This year I did it by rereading one of my favorite horror books from my youth, Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon. It's been almost forty years since I read it but it held up pretty well. I still recommend it highly. Here is my review.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 496 comments The Boy Kings of Texas A Memoir by Domingo Martinez The Boy Kings of Texas – Domingo Martinez – 2**
This is a memoir of growing up in Brownsville Texas, near the border with Mexico, in a poor barrio, with few opportunities and even less hope. There are parts of this memoir that are engaging and funny. But on the whole I felt as disenfranchised from the experiences he relates, as he states he felt. I kept waiting for some insight, and never got it, and I’m left disappointed and dissatisfied. I felt I was reading the rambling notes of a journal his therapist suggested he keep, rather than a cohesive memoir.

I think I read this when it first came out ... the women basically run things, don't they?

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 496 comments Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom Tuesdays With Morrie – Mitch Albom – 5***** and a ❤
The subtitle is the perfect synopsis: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life’s Greatest Lesson. This little gem of a book is the result of Tuesdays the author spent discussing life, death, family, work, and love with his former professor and mentor, who was dying of ALS. It’s touching and inspiring.

LA | 1333 comments Finally have gotten rolling with Last Ride to Graceland but cannot find the "initial" impressions section. At any rate, I'm enjoying it - that pink cover had me procrastinating for weeks! Reminds me a bit of Where'd Ya Go, Bernadette - smart and witty.

I wonder how many people have NOT read "Last Ride to Graceland" because of that pink cover. Her publisher should be ashamed. It was a much better better book than the cover.

Isn't it funny how a title or cover can color your level of interest for a book? I didn't know until recently that the publishers - not the author - chooses the cover art and often the title. That's not always the case, but it will be one question I have for the writer when I get finished up here.

Diane, my favorite book cover ever is for The Sisters Brothers. It told you up front that it was quirky and involved some killings, but was fun at the same time.

My. That makes me sound like an axe murderer or something.

It gave me pause but, with Kim being as charming as she is, I decided to risk expulsion from the He Man Woman Haters Club and go for it.

Remember the schoolbook covers your mom made from brown paper sacks? They work great.

message 3295: by Brina (new)

Brina I loved those. I liked to decorate them. Truthfully I never pay attention to a cover of a book. Maybe 2 times I noticed a cover at the library and grabbed a book I wouldn't have read otherwise. But usually if I want to read a book I'm not going to judge it by the cover (oh no, sorry, but I really meant it this time.).
