I really enjoyed House of Mirth, Book. I appreciate Wharton's books in general. I remember when the movie came out with Gillian Anderson, Eric Stoltz, et al, Ebert loved it, Roper was frustrated with inability of Gillian Anderson's character to get a job, rescue herself...and Ebert had to do a tutorial on societal norms of the age, how unlikely it would be for a woman of her class to find work, and how much of a death sentence being cast out of society could be. It was as if Roper had never read anything pre-1970 or thereabouts.

I just finished reading the first book in a new post apocalyptic trilogy Hell Divers by Nicholas Sansbury Smith and I liked it. My review is here:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Brina wrote: "Per recommendations from this group, I'm starting Ron Rash's Serena today."I really enjoyed (if one can "enjoy" such a dark book) Serena, and recommended it to my F2F book group.
I saw it is available on Netflix as a movie with the often starring together & nearly ubiquitous Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. It is rising on by tbr list.

Do NOT watch that movie. It will totally ruin the book for you. The screenwriter and director took a furiously boiling canyon of incandescent lava and turned it into a tepid sink bath. All of us here who loved Serena will tell you the same thing. Go for the lava, baby!

It's truly one of the worst movies I have seen in the last three years, and I am amazed J Law signed on to it. Run, Kim, run.
I never saw the movie because I heeded the advice of the ones who did. BUT, I am going to a luncheon at the Pat Conroy Literary Festival in October in Beaufort, SC. Ron Rash is the featured guest. I'm hoping I can get a signed copy of his new book there.
Now that is exciting news. I'm on vacation this week so not reading much but I have incentive to finish Serena because it's from the library so must be finished this week.
"The Land Breakers" by John Ehle and "Last Ride to Graceland" (forgot the author) won for September.
The Graceland book looks fun; do you think author will do q/a. I'll probably get In the Heat of the Night also even if it didn't win looks like a great read for late summer.

BTW, we're endeavoring to pull off a visit to Charleston/IOP in a couple of weekends .... don't let the heat, sweet tea or mosquitoes leave before we arrive.
I am following Kim Wright author of Graceland and sent her a message about q & a. Let's see if she responds. Jane I will read In the Heat of the Night with you in when I finish my current batch of books. I think Tom was also interested.
Good news, Kim Wright was quick to respond and said she would do the q and a. Maybe one of our wonderful moderators can help me out and explain to her exactly how it works. She is looking forward to participating.

Count me in. We can set up a buddy-read discussion board.

Carol, the heat, sweet tea and mosquitos aren't going anywhere. Send me a message when you're here and we'll see if we can plan a quick little meeting to say Hi. Too hot for coffee, maybe ice cream.

Yes, losing family is tough. So sorry...after just reading about the death of his family members in Rivers, the timing of your loss must have been not just sad, but ironic. As for used books, nope. I can sell them at Second & Charles if theyre stinkers. We keep the good ones for our son.
