I think I remember this book being mentioned in the afterword of Water for Elephants.

84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff– 5***** In October 1949 Helene Hanff, a single woman living and working in her small New York apartment, responded to an ad placed in the Saturday Review of Literature by Marks & Co, a bookshop in London that specialized in used books. Thus began a two-decade long correspondence and friendship between the reserved bookseller and the irrepressible Miss Hanff. What a delight it is to be allowed to watch this growing relationship, fueled by a shared love of books, and an ability to laugh at oneself and one’s follies. It’s the kind of book I’ll read over and over just for the sheer joy of it.

I read this (and a couple of other books about tragic fires) back in 2012. Excellent book.
Have seen Cirque a few times, love them. Well worth the cost.Finished Good Morning, Midnight

I just finished Lie Down in Darkness, Leanne, and Rivers a bit before that, so Rocket Boys sounds like just the ticket for giving me a nice change of pace.
Yeah, Kim! You get the "never give up" award for finishing Lie Down in Darkness. It was definitely a slog.
My son said he would have given up long before, but I really try to finish what I start. I give myself a couple of chapters to determine if it is worth my getting to be more finite time to see if the book is worth it. I felt this one was, but regarded it as more work--like a college reading assignment or prep for teaching--than pleasure at many points, although the writing was a thing of beauty. Glad to be on the other side now.

I was able to meet Yaa Gyasi and hear her read from her debut novel Homegoing. She gave me the email address of her publisher to see if she can do a Q&A for us. Keep your fingers crossed.

She lives in the area and is in between tours so she agreed to do a reading at Rakestraw Books in Danville which is about 15 miles away.

Jane, you are in France. You're supposed to be lounging at a sidewalk cafe with a good book and a glass of Chardonnay, not lying in a hospital bed. Didn't you get the memo?
Seriously, glad to hear you are on the mend.

Morphine and books.....what a great combo! I'll drink a toast to your recovery with some white wine. Not as powerful, but it'll have to do.
Jane, so sorry you are in the hospital. I spent all of last summer in a hospital bed, thank heavens for books!
Get well soon. I nearly did myself in my first day in Paris, I was lying on the marble floor after hitting my head on the counter of the reception area thinking it was not how I wanted to start my time with my daughter. Jet lag did me in, I think.
I'm thinking of flying there next year, but hearing your story makes me want to take a helmet along.Kim wrote: "Get well soon. Finished Redemption Road. I will have to read more John Hart. Now reading a baseball biography. I get withdrawal over the all star break.
Brina wrote: "Finished Redemption Road. I will have to read more John Hart. Now reading a baseball biography. I get withdrawal over the all star break."have a book by him in my shelf
I am reading The King of Lies which I believe was John Hart's first book. When I saw that Redemption Road had been nominated, it reminded me that I had bought two of his books a few years ago when I noticed that he was from North Carolina where I was born and lived for many years before moving to Pennsylvania.
I'm looking forward to reading more of Hart. Finally finished my review. We lost power, I'm at the library.
