Hey, Girls? *Ahem* Man on the floor! Yes, I'm excited about the upcoming release, too. Personally, I've always felt there was more than the one novel. According to the unauthorized biography by Charles Shields, Msn. Lee worked on the story of an Alexander City, Al, preacher who poisoned his grandchildren for insurance proceeds. Her publisher told her it was too dark too sell. Her "good friend" the attorney who recovered the manuscript...I wonder what else she's found. Shame on me.

Of course! Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles J. Shields. :)
Of course! Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles J. Shields. :)
I read "The Mockingbird Next Door" for my local bookclub a few months ago. It's very poorly written, but offered some fascinating little gossipy bits about her daily life with her sister in Monroeville. Harper Lee said she did not give her permission to the writer to publish it, but Alice Lee claimed she did. Who knows? None of us read it as gospel, but it was a fun discussion.

I just stopped mid way withA Good Fall.
I was so bad with not being written well and it was lacking what makes a good book.

Sounds good!

Started God Help the Child.
You know when Diane S. gives a 5 star instead of a 3.5 you better add it to your list of "to be read".

Finished God Help the Child

for who ever read a member of wedding I have a quick question page 86 frankie said something that looked like french . Was that french or something made up ?

Just finished it. After blowing my nose and washing my hands, I had to immediately get on here and thank you for the encouragement to read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Diane, you are absolutely right about feelings of regret probably not resonating with those who haven't lived long enough to accumulate a few. Beautiful story.

I'm so glad you liked it. It is such a beautiful book. Now you must read The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy by the same author. It will be published in the U.S. on March 3rd (I may have the exact date wrong). I swear it's even better. She wrote the books simultaneously, and you will fall in love with Queenie.

Great list of books, Jane!
I wish I lived closer to Key West so I could attend the Tennessee Williams events listed in your last message. He's one of my favorites.

Leanne, thanks for the news on this event. I wish I could get away next week...but alas, prior commitments tether. I'm reading the John Lahr biography now, 'Tennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh', which provides many insights into Williams' muses, as well as the tenor and mechanics of American theater in the forties and fifties. The 2015 festival offerings suggest a rich, heady brew indeed, not unlike the best of TW drama and Lahr's approach to laying bare the emotional history of this great artist. Hope I can get down there in 2016!

Atm I am completing Shindler's List. An enthralling story of horrific times.
A couple of things I didn't know or appreciate about the Jewish situation at that time. Madagascar was seriously considered the end point location for Jewish resettlement. Additionally, considering a history of pograms, ghettos, and repressive policies across Eastern Europe the general Jewish population entered the Nazi ghettos with hope of current hardships easing over time and that they were entering an enclave from which they might be able to take a sigh of relief and settle into existence.
Ghettos were destined to become ghost towns.
The author refers to Sophie's Choice for its authenticity in the Auschwitz camp
Oskar Shindler was an incredible person. He was arrested three times by the Gestapo for his sympathies and suspicious behavior. He greased a lot of palms. He never delivered a functioning piece of armament or weaponry.
