Lauren Smith A discussion on the Challenge Ideas thread led to a suggestion that we create themed challenges for events and holidays.

Unlike our other challenges, there is no specific schedule for these, and no set structure. The idea is that someone (anyone) can design or propose a challenge based on an upcoming event or holiday. The structure, tasks, length and time limit of the challenge will be decided on based on the theme and the challenge creator.

Examples:
- Olympics 2012 Challenge: In July and August, read 5 books based set in the countries of gold medal winners, or where a sport featured in the Olympics is a main part of the plot.
- 2012 Apocalypse Challenge: Prophecy has it that the world will end in 2012! Read 10 books set during an apocalypse or in a post-apocalyptic world. Challenge lasts from 1 January to December 31 2012.

You can also have task-based challenges like MishMash and the YA challenge, and you can make up all the tasks yourself (especially for short challenges) or allow participants to nominate their own tasks.

The event or holiday doesn't have to be a major one - this is more about making up fun new reading challenges than anything else. So you can create challenges based on anything from Christmas to the publication of the last book in your favourite trilogy.

This is very much a work in progress, so please use this thread to discuss the challenge, make suggestions and work out any kinks.

Have fun!

Why havent we taken this one furhter?
Lets do it for Christmas perhaps? Then we have time to prepare?

I suggest we do a 12 days of Christmas kind of thing? What do you think?

I like the idea of a Christmas one. I think the Game of Thrones one is next, which should then end in November.

Lu, I thought the Game of Thrones would start in November. My understanding is that it would replace the Parasol Protectorate challenge. I may be mistaken though.

In terms of these, the WINTER challenge is on at the moment, then we have either a Jane Austen one, a memorial one for the famous writers who died recently and potentially a JFK one due. A 12 days one for December is a nice idea.

We can fit the 12 days one in somewhere :)

Ah Crap, don't remind me. I still have to start on the GoT challenge. I hardly did anything last month with goodreads except reading due to personal/emotional/family events, but I will post something soon.

The twelve days one I was thinking should start in October and end at 31 December?
Or we could do it shorter... I'll post my whole Idea shortly, I've got a great one (or I hope so :))
