"Lincoln? Are you asleep?"
"I didn't know someone could love me like this," she said. "Could love me and love me and love me without...needing space."
Lincoln wasn't asleep. He rolled on top of her.
"There's no air in space," he said.
I'm just gonna go with the simple and funny explanation that space is imaginative and figurative. Lincoln isn't giving her space by rolling on top of her as a sign of his affection - additionally, if a big guy like him is on top you can't breath. So he uses her word 'space' to simulate outer space with his funny remark :)
