Recently, I've been to Puerto Rico (The Rum Diary), Japan (or Siam or wherever exactly it is that the River Kwai is) and now I'm in Italy for A Farewell to Arms. I think I'd like to stay in the Italy/Spain area for a while with Under the Tuscan Sun and The Sun Also Rises, but I might just opt for England with Lady Chatterley's Lover.Meg, I absolutely love that you came up with this idea!
Lori I am so glad that you love it. I am going to talk to Thauna when things calm down at work and see if we can make a world map and flag all the countries we have been to. Right now my time is so limited.

This story begins at the close of WWI, continues through the depression, a..."Elizabeth, I loved this book, too. Have you read Floating in My Mother's Palm as well? It takes place in the same town after the events in Stones From The River.
Petra, I didn't know there was one after that. I read Stones so long ago I should probably refresh before finding Floating. Thanks...another book on my list! :)I seem to be stuck in England or the US lately in all my reads so will have to make an effort to take a summer trip somewhere.
I did do another brief stint in Japan with another Haruki Murakami book After Dark but it was not at all like his Kafka on the shore which I really liked.
Petra wrote: "Elizabeth, I loved this book, too. Have you read Floating in My Mother's Palm as well? It takes place in the same town after the events in Stones From The River"Stones is the only Hegi I've read, but I want to read more.
"I want to read more" - anyone else saying this about everything?
Ursula Hegi is one of those authors I keep saying "I need to read something by her", but then I see something shiny and I never get around to it. Thanks for bringing her to my attention again!
I ordered a few of her books from paperbackswap but they are sitting in my TBR pile. I also did not know there was a sequel to Stones. I will add that book as well.
I own Stones from the River, I will need to push that up and read it. I am interested in hearing something other than the American point of view...how others were affected, what they went through. I just finished The Lost Garden by Helen Humphreys and it was a story about war torn London. My friends and family will never be able to describe that because they wern't there! Thanks for the recommendation.
I suppose that I'm moving off to Europe as I follow the Easy Company around World War II. I'm reading Band of Brothers. I'm really excited about it. I've been wanting to catch it on the History Channel sometime, but it looks like it's an all-day event.
OK everyone the map is up and running. It is combined with members location and then our book title and place book took place. I have my first three books on there. Take your time when you add your books, this will be fun. Remember to hit edit first, then click on blue icon and when your done click on save.http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF...
Ufff I hope I did this correctly... Tried to add Ethiopia and Addis Abbaba & the Seventh Scroll .. after I added it I accidentally deleted the whole map.. I know I know I'm Blonde!!!! Then I "undid" the bad bad deed. So now the map is saved and my Ethiopia is there I hope and also I think another little flag which I have no idea where it is in the map :) sorry...
If I find a floating flag Duygu I will know it is yours! For those of you who are having trouble what part is it that isn't working for you?
Edit the map. I find the "edit" button next to collaborate, but all that does is bring up the box that names the map. I haven't a clue how to add a location.
Elizabeth - When you click the "Edit" button, 3 new icons show up at the top left side of the map pane. Click on the blue flag in the center, then click where you want to place it.
I added a bunch of books, too. One is in the ocean off Australia, because I didn't zoom in enough to get it properly placed. I'd be glad to delete it and set it again, but I can't find it in the list. One more thing . . .
One flag for where you live. Then one flag for each book that your read (the flag goes where the book took place)
Lori wrote: "This is so fun Meg! I'm going to have to go back and look for specific locations though..."I know! That's the hard part, and then you have to find it on the map. But it's a fun kind of hard, so it's worth it!
Well the geographical challenge is a learning experience!PS I couldn't figure out where the Dominican Republic was so I just dropped the flag in the ocean, I know I am shameless
How do you create flags? I don't have an edit button when I go there. I can see everyone else's flags, but don't know how to make some of my own.

Isn't it on the same island as Haiti? It looks like you at least got it close!
LinBee, yes it is shares the island with Haiti, but I had to guesstimate, I am glad it is close!I love the map!
OK So I finished Little Bee (good book) that covers Nigeria. Where on the map in Africa is that??????? I am so geographically challenged!
Meg I am finally reading/listening to What is the what? It is really keeping my interest and the reader is really good. :)Just finished...yeah!
I think this thread got buried but it's so great I'm not letting go.
Let's see... I've been to India with The Blue Notebook I really think a lot of you would like it. tough read but so well done.
I'm trying to get to Columbine but some yahoo has it overdue a week now. I'm also thinking of taking a trip back to england with some zombies and Ms Austen.
Where has everyone been this month?

I have been reading a lot of books that have taken place in Germany and Poland. I am very interested in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. I finished Skeletons of the Feast, Sarah's Key and am in the middle of The ZooKeeper's Wife.I also just returned from China with Factory Girls.
Has everyone entered their books on the map? It is pretty impressive..
Sweden - The Girl with the Dragon TattooGermany - Those Who Save Us
Afghan - Three Cups of Tea One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
US (Boston) - Ponzi's Scheme The True Story of a Financial Legend
China - Peony in Love
Bosnia - People of the Book
England - A Walk with Jane Austen A Journey into Adventure, Love, and Faith
Ireland - Sushi for Beginners A Novel
I'm in Botswana right now with The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on audio.Sad to say, but I'm not enjoying it very much. :(
There are some great around the world books everyone has suggested here, some I've read and some I plan to read based on your recommendations. Great thread :)
Tempted to google doc a spreadsheet to show which countries have been taken (by so many times), then if the country is based by author or setting. Looking at my To Read stack, I have one for France and Nepal.
That would be awesome Tanja. The map is a lot of fun but a spreadsheet would be very easy to read.My idea was that when we had clusters of one country we could open a seperate thread and discuss that one particular country (culture/literacy etc) Which is what we did in the mideastern thread that Tera opened.
Tanja, look back up the thread and find the link to a google map for books read by our group. I have been in the US mostly since last I reported with the exception of Those Who Save Us in Germany.
