The editions are all combined. However, the older one is the default, because it has been shelved by more users than the newer one. As more shelve the newer one, that will change.

However, my biggest concern is that the old, no longer available, cover is attached to the book. I need to know if I can delete it, and add the new cover photo without breaking any rules.

Absolutely not. That is a valid cover, and that edition of the book was published with that cover. We do not remove out of print books or out of print editions. Think of Goodreads as being more similar to a library than a bookstore. Users want to be able to shelve the edition of a book they read, regardless of whether it is the edition currently for sale.
The newer edition is also listed. http://www.goodreads.com/work/edition...

Question:I just tried to separate a display from a combined bunch of books and got the message only superlibrarians can do this.
Then I tried to combine a couple of identical books and got the same message.
Is this a new policy?
OK, so I guess the only option open to me is to separate my books. In trying to do so, I got a message: "only Goodreads librarians can do this". Even though I am one! Rivka, can you please provide me with the exact steps I must now go through in order to separate my books? Thanks
Paul there is a bug going around. Please see this thread.ETA: Also please do not separate your books.
Thanks for the heads up. Looks like the bug has been fixed. Why the advice not to separate my books?
Thanks again.
It is GR policy that all editions of a book are combined to ensure correct statistics and so that users can see all the editions from the book page
I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm confused. I joined the author program to promote my books, not just to have them listed as if in a library. I don't want to promote the first edition of Trophy. I thought that combining the editions would allow Goodreads members to see the current cover and read all the reviews. To my great disappointment, the old cover photo is the only one for Trophy. I don't want that. If I can't have my new cover photo, based on what I've read here, I should separate the books again. Not a very good option, perhaps, but at least the new cover is seen.
The bug is fixed.
Paul, you are not a librarian; you are a Goodreads Author. GR Authors have limited librarian access to their books. They can not, for example, separate editions.
If you promote your new edition (perhaps with a giveaway), soon more users will have it shelved than the older one, and it will show up as the default.

Once more people have shelved the newer edition then it will be the default there is no way to manually change it.Separating the books will only lead to them being combined again since that is GR policy.
This site for a lot of people a book cataloging site and as such they don't care about "new covers" since they own the old edition.
Thank you for your help. I will concentrate on promoting the new edition so it will become the default title.
rivka wrote: "Are you sure that's what the message said?"Yup. Reading has always been one of my strong suits.
I ask because we had a bug for about 45 minutes today that was preventing some librarian edits, and told current librarians they did not have librarian access.
Are you still getting this message?

Also, can anyone add the url or other locator for the combine page? I cannot locate it now.
Thanks
