"Okay." Nick said, staring at the ceiling. The shadows were gone now.

Noir cocked her eyebrow and turned to leave, pausing in the doorway. "And when I come back I don't want to hear any comments about sandy witches, alright?" She left, calling back over her shoulder; "Those kind of jokes get old fast, trust me."

Nick laughed. "I wouldn't dream of it!" He called back, although he was thinking of saying it before she had mentioned it.

"Good." Noir smirked, re-entering the room with the container she had stuck the food in the previous day. She sat back down on the end of her bed and pulled the lid off, taking a sandwich out and handing him the other.

Nick took the sandwich. "Thank you." He said, biting into it. A shadow crept up behind him and tried to snatch the sandwich but he waved them away irritably.

She played with hers, not really feeling like eating. She nodded to the shadow and grinned, giving Nick a look.

"What?" He asked, shrugging. "They're as clingy as toddlers." The shadow got riled up at that and went to sulk in a corner.

Noir finally took a bite of her sandwich, watching the shadow retreat. "It's interesting." She murmered between chewing.

Nick looked at the shadow and it seemed to stare back. "Yeah. They've always kind of been my only friends."

Noir reached out and squeezed his hand gently, silent. She felt his now normally chill hand and sighed inwardly, sadly reflecting on what plagued him as a twisted irony.

Lily walked to the kitchen and opened the fridge. Finding an ice cream sandwich, she grabbed three and went to the table. She held out one to Mason. "Want one?"

Nick shook his head. "Nah. That's fine." He snapped his fingers and the shadow crept out of the corner and wrapped itself around his leg. It curled tightly around the skin and settled there, like a big black gauze.
