Seriously cried when Mason died! :'O They way Rose was in so much grief that she was still trying to fight the guardians off when they came in too help! Don't know why he had to die. Guess it might have been to show that when guardians in training don't follow the rules that consequences happened. :/ but still I missed Masons niceness and bubblyness in the books after his death :'( x

He was a great character and thats one of the reasons he died - Mead wanted to show, that she is a good enough autor that she can kill any character and we (her fans) will still read anything she writes. She has a talent in writing things different authors wouldn't and thats why I like her so much. She can always surprise me.
Plus, he came back in the next book like a ghost...

i reckon it was done because he was the perfect character for it. He was full of life- alaways a must and he was in love with rose and she didn't love him back so killing him would be an easy way to get rid of him so rose cold move forward in her love life without making her seem like a bad person for breaking his heart.
Well, if Mason hadn't died, it would have changed the whole outcome of the series. It was him, after all, who led Rose and the others to the strigois in the thrid book, (view spoiler) and so on. If Mason hadn't died, Rose wouldn't have gotten the character developement she did at the end of the second book either and, like I said, the whole series would have ended differently.

other wise she might not have been as eager to be with Dimitri.
she probably still would have but it wouldn't have been as good
(im only up to the second book)

oooh do i want to keep reading? i found out by accident that Dimitri turns strigoi. how sad!! WHY WHY WHY?!?!?
Read, Richelle has a good reason for everything, (And, Geena, please put that in a spoiler box. This is exactly the thing that upsets me.)
Claudia wrote: "That moment was very sad...I really did like Mason, she could have killed off anyone else"Except Rose, or we wouldn't have seen more of mason :)
I've read the entire series twice now and I still felt sad reading the chapter. He did try to save Rose, and her grief over it all just made me tear all up...Richelle Mead, you are one gifted writer!
I was reading the new graghic novel in b&N, and my sister comes over to me when i was on page when isaiah first comes in the room. My sister looked at him then at me."What the hell are you reading about?" She says and walks away. I busted out laughing

Your making me cry again with that picture!!!! *sobs*
and i have no idea why that made me cry more than the first time i read the graphic novel :(
MASON!!!!!!
poor mason. I kind of couldn't believe it at first.I was like "there is no way he just died. no way."
Geena wrote: "Mikaela wrote: "i reckon it was done because he was the perfect character for it. I was that way too. I was like....He is coming back from the dead because him and rose are meant to be. They always fine the craftiest ways to keep people alive. Like..."because she is my sister, I can call on her spirit and we can kill other person, and she will stay in that body." I mean come on, if there dead, there dead.
OMG! I was crying my eyes out when mason died. It was so heartbreaking. I loved him so much. I nearly liked him more than Dimitri. He was the best... :(

Because sometimes in life the people we least expect to die, do die. I will admit I think I actually did cry at this point in the book. Or at least came close to it.I cannot speak for the author of this series, but as a writer working on my own stuff I have come to find that in the process of letting the events of the story take shape, things I least expected like the death of a favorite character do come to be a major turning point in the story. As horrified as I am by this if I were to change that sudden and shocking development, somehow it wouldn't be the same. The characters wouldn't be the same.
ya i agree.i have read the whole series three or four times now and i was so so so sad when mason died, but if he wouldnt have then the whole series would be different and i like it the way it is.R.I.P Mason!!!
He had to die for Rose to really grow up, to see the reality of the world she lives in. He was loveable enough that he had an effect on her, but he was one-not enough that the story could continue well. His death was tragic but necessary, if they had all escaped Spokane alive Rose would continue to be cocky and reckless. His death subdued that in her and helped her realize that actions do have consequence.
Agree with lot of the other posts. Mason meant a lot to Rose, even though she didn't see him as a boyfriend, she did love him and care for him. His death is a turning point in the story. Rose changes, becomes serious and determinant, and he was the only on besides Lissa and Dimitri who could have made such a change in her, and it wouldn't make much sense to kill either of those two, since they are some of the main characters.
I cried, he was such a happy and awesome character.
It was a shame that Mason died. But he was needed to further the plot. It was a much better end than what Adrian, Sydney, Jill and Eddie got. They basically just got screwed over and left behind by Rose on her quest to get back with Dimitri and get Lissa on the throne.
I think its because she didn't want to let rose get through breaking mason's heart so it was easire to kill him

LOL. In novels they often do.
I hated that she killed off Mason i was crying and shaking when she did that it was horrible but i agree with a lot of u it did force Rose to grow up and build her character.
Amber wrote: "I hated that she killed off Mason i was crying and shaking when she did that it was horrible but i agree with a lot of u it did force Rose to grow up and build her character."Yeah, until the LS. Then she sort of devolved.
