Laura (apenandzen) Wow thx Sara, that's one I've not read yet! Have to sneak that up my TBR. I'm not looking forward to the day when I've read everything she and the Bronte sisters have written. :(

Bronte sisters? No thanks for me... I don't like the gothic stuff... I dunno. It's just not for me.

Another possible task: Read a book that takes place near you (same or bordering state or country). (I felt bad that I wasn't talking about the subject anymore... so sorry if that's lame!)

Or, to steal one from the fall challenge: Read a book by an author you've never read before.

message 153: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Sara - Persuasion is my favorite, too! I'm glad to see that you enjoyed it.

message 154: by Jon (new)

Jon can we make it broader terms if gardening - i have no garden and no interest - could go with a flower name or something though

I second that motion.

message 156: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (mamamunky) Read a book that's a retelling of a fairy tale.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Lindsey wrote: "Read a book that's a retelling of a fairy tale. "

Oooh... I like it!

Like it too that one!!!"

Me, too!
I typed in 'chocolate' (Like for Valentine's Day!) and came up with bunches 'o books! Could work best if Cynthia gives us a few themes to work from....otherwise we could be all over the map!
Also, I like the suggestion of a book that takes place in a location we've always wanted to visit...who ever did that one, Thanks.

message 159: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (mamamunky) How about one "open" task. Like "Read any book you choose."

message 160: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) A few more ideas:

Judge a book buy its cover -- read a book with a cover you love

Pick a book off of someone else's challenge list and read it

Read a book you had planned to read in the Winter (or Fall) challenge and didn't get to in time (for me this is half of my Winter list!)

message 161: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Jen I love all of those !

Jen, like your two first suggestions1
And I often pick up a book becasue I like the cover. That was my mistake for The lovely bones. Loved the cover, hated the book.

message 163: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Jen -- I love the cover idea. I can imagine myself going to the library, and just pulling random books off the shelf, inspecting the covers, making a face, and then putting them back...

The YA section always has really cute covers.

message 164: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Another idea tho, for the challenge could be to pick a book w/a really UGLY cover. I find it really hard to read a book w/an awful cover.

message 165: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Laura wrote: "Another idea tho, for the challenge could be to pick a book w/a really UGLY cover. I find it really hard to read a book w/an awful cover."

I do, too! :) I love editions of books with pretty covers. I know I'm not supposed to judge a book that way, but I can't help it! I work in marketing...I like to see things presented nicely! :)

message 166: by Jon (new)

Jon I couldnt possibly read and ugly covered book! plenty to choose from though!

Read a book with a Colour in the Title

message 167: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Yes! I can read Harold and the Purple Crayon ! :)

message 168: by Jon (last edited Feb 03, 2009 06:45PM) (new)

Jon i think that would be your only chance judging by that random title!

message 169: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) It was my favorite book as a child... :)

message 170: by Bonnie (last edited Feb 03, 2009 10:57PM) (new)

Bonnie | 271 comments I think Jen's idea of reading a book with a pretty cover and Laura's idea of reading a book with an ugly cover are both good! I usually DO choose a book by the cover and often it turns out well (but I have been burned plenty of times). I've noticed a remarkable increase in quality of book covers lately, too.

But one of my favorite books as a child was the Maude Reed Tale. I randomly picked it up at a church garage sale and despite the hideous cover read it. It was so great! And one of my favorite YA authors is having some of her new books published at what must be a tiny little publishing company, because all the covers look like they were made by some incredibly untalented person did a bad job of using photoshop.

message 171: by Jon (new)

Jon one mans pretty is another mans ugly :)

message 172: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) The nice thing about the cover tasks is it can allow you to fit more books into the challenge, which I like. I think with more flexibility to fit your planned reading it, there may be more participants.

message 173: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Speaking of which - how about this: The top 3 winners now get to choose the 25 point tasks.

What say the next 10 winners all get their names thrown in a hat and get to choose either a 4th 25 point task OR perhaps one of the 15 pt. tasks?

Almost like a wild card round. Might create more interest for people who still read a lot, but aren't speed readers.....

message 174: by Jon (new)

Jon i was actually thinking there should be some form of incentive for the people that have been playing steadily all the way through but never going to be top 3 in case they lose interest if they think theyre never going to win - we have to use this principle at work with incentives otherwise 75% of people give up early on we find, mind you as Cythia pointed out everyone does have a chance to contribute to the next one

message 175: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yeah, but this way instead of throwing the idea out and hoping Cynthia likes it, the person from the hat would actually get to pick one of the tasks.

But I do think we should have some kind of incentive for everyone who's really trying. Maybe for everyone who breaks a certain point level - like 250 or 300, I don't know, something like that.

message 176: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I have created a certificate of participation - so anyone who competes in the challenge will receive a link to their certificate at the end of the challenge. So therefore everyone will get something for playing the game.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Cynthia wrote: "I have created a certificate of participation - so anyone who competes in the challenge will receive a link to their certificate at the end of the challenge. So therefore everyone will get something for playing the game."

That's totally adorable.

message 178: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) That is cute, Cynthia!

message 179: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I was just thinking that we could all read each other's favorite books. At the beginning, we could all post our favorite book (or one of our favorites), then Cynthia could keep a master list of them all (maybe in the initial post), and we would have to pick one of them to read (not your own, obviously).

It would kind of be like the top books idea, except it would just be us.

message 180: by Jeane (new)

message 182: by Jon (last edited Feb 04, 2009 05:39PM) (new)

Jon thats a great idea Cynthia! Ive had another one inspuired by my work that wouldnt involve changing the structure at all but encourages team participation and spirit. At the end of this challenge you could add up our total cumulative (good word!) points. This would be our benchmark for to beat and Cynthia could estimatate a target for us to go for for the Spring Challenge to stretch us - that way everyones points no matter how small are, they are contributing to the team goal and everyones a winner! should be a cynch to improve anyway as the the challenge is getting huge!

message 183: by Sherry (new)

Sherry | 49 comments Jeez, Cynthia...seems like this is turning into a full-time job for you! Hope you have help with all this organization.
If you are doing it all by your lonesome, then you are "a better man than I, Gunga Din."
(By the way, if you do happen to be that organized, want to do my taxes for me? I'm a mess!!)

message 184: by Angie (new)

Angie (angie) I think this one may have been mentioned already, but I like it so much that I think it needs to be suggested again.

Read a book from someone else's "To-Read" list.

But how would we choose whose list to read from? It'd be nice and fair if we were paired up with someone. That might be too much work, though.

message 185: by Jon (new)

Jon poor Cynthia - i volunteer to be your challenge bitch if you need an assistant at any point!

message 186: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments John that's not a bad idea - I've been thinking about putting together some stats about the challenge anyway (since it's popularity has shot through the roof) - and thanks for the offer - I only work part time so this gives me something to do besides the reading I should be doing. :)

Sherry - sorry I don't even do my own taxes (I have my dad do them) - lol!!!

message 187: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Jon wrote: "poor Cynthia - i volunteer to be your challenge bitch if you need an assistant at any point!"

Challenge bitch....hmm...that's a nice phrase...I was gonna volunteer to help you too Cynthia, but it would have to be after tax season when I go back to having more time again.

:)

message 188: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I really like Sara's idea (#190)of reading someone else who is doing the challenge's favorite book and also Fiona's about reading a book w/someone on GR or even on TNBBC.

message 189: by Jon (last edited Feb 05, 2009 05:38AM) (new)

Jon hmm... sorry about courseness Laura, its a matter of course (no pun intended) in these far flung corners of the globe and you forget to mind oyur ps and qs! ..im a good boy really

message 190: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) No I actually thought it was funny, just forgot to add the LOL

(it's weird when you're typing you have to be careful to convey the emotion so people know you're not offended - ok i'm talkign too much now...)

Anyway I thought that was really funny - never heard it before!

:)

message 191: by Liz M (new)

Liz M Playing off of other people's ideas above:

Read a book that was given 5 stars by one of the Top 10 readers from the Winter Challenge.

(Because we all want other people to read our favorite books, right?)

Maybe we could mention the person we want to read a book of their lsit and then she or he just picks one she or he would like us to try. So no lists or anything but just when you want to know.

A job about a stay-at-home mom, eh? Hmmmm.... *ponders*

message 199: by Meghan (new)

Meghan (meghanly) | 218 comments I saw this in another group and thought it was super cute - maybe for bonus points? Or maybe a separate thread altogether? I don't know just thought I would share...

The challenge is to read books whosefirst letters spell out your name. You can use first name, nickname, last name or complete name...it's your choice.

It will look like this, again using Tasha's as an example.

T: Tempting the Beast by Lora Leigh
A: Assignment by Evangeline Anderson
S: Strictly Taboo by Jaid Black
H: Hot Spot by Susan Johnson
A: Amaryllis by Jayne Castle

message 200: by Jon (new)

Jon cute! dont make me use my full name though that would be a months worth! Jonathan Fitzsimmonds
