I took a technical writing course several years ago and the instructor insisted on active voice. I've found that when I write technical documentation it's the best, and clearest way to write.

message 248: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Holborn (hannahholborn) | 4 comments When I read a great first line, I'm smitten. I hug the book I know I will love to my chest and head to the nearest checkout counter. Usually it's a strong, appealing voice that gets me (like in the amazing collection "Some Rain Must Fall")--or something unexpected in the language. I've lost count of how many drafts I've done on my books' first lines and paragraphs trying to find the magic!

From "The Hug House"

"If Journey Goodlander expected anything from her day off work at Chunky Chicken, it was boredom with a side of loneliness rather than the opportunity of a lifetime."

From soon to be released "Gabriel" (a suspense novel about a kidnapped boy with a drug-addicted mother who blocks the investigation):

"Celine’s need for nicotine trumps everything."
