She's a great Aussie author! I have Antony and Cleopatra at home, I've had it for simply ages (years!) and haven't got to it. She's going blind now, so we need to make the most of her work while she's still able to produce it:)

I really liked her Masters of Rome series. There are six or seven of them, all big chunky books about the Roman Empire.

Good to know Angela, I will keep him in mind for Aussie author challenges ;) I thought the film was very well done with a fine cast of Aussie actors.

Stephen Bush (sbus) | 7 comments Have just The Pericles Commission (The Athenian Mysteries, #1) by Gary Corby enjoyed The Pericles Commission by Australian author Gary Corby.

Seems there are now four in the series. A good light mystery with very good historical accuracy in the setting, which is Ancient Greece.

Marina Finlayson | 285 comments If you like fantasy, Glenda Larke has a new one out -- The Lascar's Dagger. Just picked it up yesterday and am looking forward to it immensely. I'm a big fan! I can also recommend a smaller-scale fantasy by Brisbane author Ceinwen Langley called The Edge of the Woods which I just finished (and reviewed here).

In general fiction my favourite Aussie author is probably Liane Moriarty. All of hers are great, but my favourite is What Alice Forgot. I just wish she wrote faster!

message 182: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1 comments Compelling new thriller!!!First Night of Summer First Night of Summer by Landon Parham

Landon Parham plays by his own set of rules in this debut suspense novel, First Night of Summer. The sequences were intricately woven with captivating characters and full of rich detail. Sometimes graphic in nature---walking right up to that line but careful not to cross it. Ricky Doors is a new level of villian as that people like him actually exist in our toxic society. Humanity can be cruel and inhuman whether we choose to recognize it or not. Isaac Snow and his family are forced to recognize it when Ricky Doors attempts to kidnap one of their twin daughters, forever changing the course of their life. Don't shy away from subject matter of this book. The content is definitely uncomfortable, but within this story of torment is a hidden gem of uplifting emotion. Like many other books in this genre, I found adrenaline in the pages, but furthermore, the author led me into a plotline that digs deeply into the heart. This read is well worth it in my humble opinion. I hope everyone finds the depth as I did.

Gary Disher Challis series
Celia Dart-Thorton first series until the last three chapters was amazing (she just tied it up too quickly)

No he's not Australian (English in fact!) but he did travel in WA, saw the statue of Red Dog in Dampier and wrote his story. It is a very good book and there was also an excellent film made of it you might want to look for when you've read the story :)
