Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments For a mainly British group we really don't talk enough about the traditional British cup of tea. I was musing on the amazing proliferation of types of tea available since I was a child, and I thought it was about time we had a thread about it. Please join in and tell us all about your favourite type of tea - steaming hot or iced? Loose leaf or teabag? Black, white or green? Earl grey or Rooibos? And of course, the perfect biscuit to go with it, incorporating the vital decision... to dunk or not to dunk! Go on, you will, you will, you will, you will....

Oh and please don't mention the Nutrimatic Drinks Dispenser!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments My favourite is the Starbucks Chai Latte by the way, and their caramel waffles go very nicely with it.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3785 comments Don't like tea - I'm a coffee drinker!! Or hot chocolate.
Hobnobs are best to dunk.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Green tea, flavoured with jasmine...

Does that make me classy or weird?

message 5: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments Tea made with leaves (my Nan's, not sure what make it is) with milk. My fav dunker is milk chocolate digestive (not Mcvities though, prefer Tesco or Sainsbury's own make, not the basic one but the other one! Wow I am particular!) and have just enjoyed 2 with my cup of tea (first biscuit I have had in over a week)

Classy I think. I had a bottle of chilled green tea with mint from M&S with my dinner last night. Very nice and refreshing.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I only drink tea when I am stressed or feeling a bit rubbish, there is something comforting about tea. I haven't had much since I finished Uni. And I have coffee very rarely and I'm not even sure something made with so much milk and lots of sugar even qualifies as coffee...

My favourite at the minute is Turkish Apple Tea from a local shop it's loose but it's chunks of fruit rather than leaves. Also the green tea that they serve in Wagamama's, it's less bitter than normal green tea, and I buy it loose from the same local shop in Aberdeen.

message 8: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments Oh, and I don't dunk

message 9: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments I only dunk at weekends :) and it's a ginger biscuit (low fat, low calorie) and Sainsbury's tea! Very down to earth we are here. Tho the occasional cup of Earl Grey on a summer afternoon is rather nice.

message 10: by Pauline (new)

Pauline Byrne | 26 comments Normal everyday tea - I drink loads of it. I can't stand fruit tea (or hot juice as it could be called) and I very really drink coffee.

If I have biscuits they get dunked for sure but my favourite biscuit to dunk is ginger nuts!!!

message 11: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Plain old PG Tips/Typhoo/etc for me, i.e. nothing fancy. I'm not 'brand loyal' though. I like it quite strong with a splash of milk. Always start the day with a cup of tea, and have another late afternoon. At other times I drink coffee, but usually decaf.

For dunking... plain chocolate digestives (don't like milk chocolate, at least not the British recipe - far too sweet)

Hot juice, YUM!

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I've definitely got into a routine. Earl Grey with breakfast, cappuccino at 11. Earl Grey again with lunch. Peppermint tea mid-afternoon. Cappuccino about 7 and Earl Grey over TV in the late evening, curled up with Linda.

That's my biggest confession of the month. Pathetic, isnt it?

message 14: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments You're such a wild child Geoff! You should tone down the lifestyle a bit before you get yourself into trouble

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments And does anyone have strong views on the loose leaf v. teabags debate. My parents wouldn't let teabags into the house - its loose leaf and a tea strainer. I am fine with teabags myself.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments PG Tips pyramid tea bags and a couple of pieces of toast to start the day for me!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Simon (Highwayman) wrote: "PG Tips pyramid tea bags and a couple of pieces of toast to start the day for me!"

Does the pyramid shape make a difference to the whole experience?

Is there a difference?

message 19: by Simon (Highwayman) (last edited Aug 08, 2012 05:38AM) (new)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I line the pyramid teabags up to my razor and the cosmic resonance sharpens the blade while I drink my tea....

message 20: by Tim (new)

Tim | 8539 comments Teabags here. I don't buy based on shape, so sometimes they're pyramids, sometimes round, or whatever. Haven't seen a razor in several years, so can't comment on the sharpening ability.

I have a tea strainer, but I use it mostly to catch stray grounds that escape from the coffee plunger.

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments i cant have a huge amount of caffeine although during the uni years i did indeed take up being a tea drinker but i cant go back to that again this time. when i drunk tea it was tetley.

now i go for a soya decaf drink in starbucks if anything..

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments So Elle you wouldn't like my Dad's description of building site tea... Take one large, more or less empty paint can. Fill with hot water from the boiler. Pour in a packet of tea. Let it stew over the fire until it eats the spoon. Stir with an old paint stick. Pour into dirty mugs and put in 6 spoons of sugar to kill the taste. Don't add milk, real men don't need milk. Drink as many times daily as you can get away with it.

message 23: by Elle (new)

Elle (louiselesley) | 6579 comments note the can't....

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I don't drink tea only coffee, but saying that I did have a can of Liptons iced tea which I think had some peach flavouring in it which was ok.

My mum used to say I liked tea when I was little but I think she got me confused with the dog who used to have tea and toast in the morning...I used to nick his Good Boy choc drops!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I'm a coffee drinker. I love my coffee and always buy the best quality I can find.
Instant coffee is NOT coffee. Horrible stuff.
My favourite kind is Kenyan Peaberry. Spider Robinson mentions it in one of his books, so I had to try it. Smooth, dark, rich. Lovely stuff.
And no milk for me, please. It must be cream or failing that, coffee mate.
I religiously have two cups every morning.
Occasionally, I'll have an espresso in the evening. Made the mistake of having one last night and was up half the night.
I only dunk in fresh, cold milk.
Oreos dunked in milk, yum. Have to be careful with that though. I've been known to go through an entire packet in one sitting.
My favourite dunking cookie are Fudgie-os. I think that's what they're called...
Only ever seen them in Canada. They're made by a company in Kitchener, I think, so they may only be available in Ontario.
Oh and chocolate mint girl scout cookies. *drools*
Not had any in years and years!
Perhaps I'll have my mommy ship me out a few boxes...

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments Chai latte is nice. I like a nice Earl Grey too. As for biscuits, this is the best cookie recipe I've ever found: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/cho...

That's my curse. I try to avoid biscuits on the whole, because once I start, I can't stop. It's why I'm this shape. I should stay out of this topic now, cos I'm getting a craving...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments This places does some fabulous teas, and they have a shop in Dublin. Lovely place to browse...

Wonder if amazon.com sells girl scout cookies...

message 31: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments When you say cream Patti, is it like single or double cream?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Omg, they do!!!!

Now. How do I get them?

Bet GL always asks for whipping cream....

I have my own machine for that!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Single cream, Jud. Aka pouring cream.

I prefer halfnhalf but they don't seem to do it in the UK.

Only uht cream here but at least I can get it. Very rarely had cream in the shop on the island and was a redickalus price when there was any.

I'll have to get an ice cream maker!

Green tea ice cream is yummy!

message 36: by Sadie (new)

Sadie Forsythe Not British, but have definitely taken to the tea drinking. Favourite tea is just regular old PG Tips or Typhoo (whatever that counts as, black tea?) and my favourite biscuit is the caramel digestive. Yum.

Victoria (daisyduck) (daisyduck1976) | 109 comments I LOVE tea. IT has to be good quality and strong. I like Yorkshire or Assam best.

Ginger biscuits and hob nobs are the best dunkers. Mmmmm.

It seems appropriate to link to this classic video too :)

R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments I know this is mad. But I suddenly feel like a cigar. And I don't smoke.

Will settle for a PG Tips decaf. I nick the bag from a collegaue who is away -- is my secret safe with you? I buy a box every six months or so.

Mago (Mark) | 1709 comments 3/4 Assam & 1/4 Earl Grey, brewed in a proper pot and served in a proper cup.

my mouth is actually watering .. and I can hear the satisfying clink of fine china

Lynne (Tigger's Mum) | 4643 comments Whatever tea its got to be in a china cup or mug. I do prefer loose leaf but its getting hard to find a decent teastrainer. I swear I can taste the fabric of the teabags. Green tea with mango is lovely. Jasmine tea is nice but for me has to be very weak or its overpowering. Roibos is VILE. The best tea I ever had was from the weighbridge man where I worked who used to give me some from his enamel billycan, measured out in his less than clean hand, sweetened with condensed milk and stewed on the boiler for hours. Nectar.
I only dunk custard creams in coffee.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Here you go Lynne. Loads to choose from.

message 46: by Alison (new)

Alison Buck | 1299 comments Hi GL
Let me see...

First thing in the morning, it has to be coffee - Guatamalan, made using the cafetière or, if I'm out and about, a double espresso (but not Starbucks, never Starbucks - really don't like their coffee).

Throughout the rest of the day, it would be Earl Grey (teabags) or, if I fancy a pick-me-up, a tall glass of fresh mint tea.

The mint tea would have a teaspoon of sugar in it but, otherwise, I never add sugar, even to espresso. In fact, that would be my definition of a really poor espresso; if I felt I'd have to add some sugar to make it palatable.

When I'm in Italy, I get through quite a lot of iced tea. Does that count?

Hmmm. Good job I brought my cup and saucer with me, GL - all this talk of cuppas is making me thirsty.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I see you are a coneseur or something that I cant remember how to spell. Never mind, lets have some coffee and bilberry tart.

And iced tea certainly counts.

Victoria (daisyduck) (daisyduck1976) | 109 comments I firmly believe that Earl Grey and also Lady Jane tea is the work of dark forces. Nothing that smells and tastes so disgusting can possibly be anything else.

Bleuuurrrgh!
;)

Victoria (daisyduck) (daisyduck1976) | 109 comments Oh and iced tea is yum, yum yum! Love it when I visit the USA. With a nice slice of lemon or a splash of cranberry.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Oh and I forgot to say, every visitor to this tbread gets a complimentary beverage and a biscuit of their choice.
