message 205: by Yuri (new)

Yuri Sar (yurisar) Thank you Reggia! Glad to be here :-)

Janelle - Me too! I keep a poetry book on my desk and I also tend to have 2-3 books "on the go", two in English and one in my mother tongue. The exception has been these past weeks. I am currently finishing five I was really looking forward to reading before the end of the year.
What are your favourite genres?

Have a lovely Christmas celebration everyone!!

Yvonne | 138 comments hello Yurena! glad to have you here!

have a merry Christmas

message 207: by Janelle (new)

Janelle (janelle5) | 756 comments Yurena, I always have difficulty answering that question. I guess sci fi is my favourite, but I tend to read across genres. The two genres I dislike the most are pure romance, and Amish fiction. But I will read most genres in fiction, if I like the author and the characters. I don't read quite as broadly in non fiction, but I still read a number of different genres. You're welcome to take a look at my shelves if you like.
What genres do you enjoy?

Merry Christmas to you to and all the Litwit Lounge members!

message 208: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne | 138 comments Wow, just add and fantasy after the the word sci-fi in Janelles answer and you have my reading preferences summed up too. I do read more graphic novels, but that's not a genre in itself.

Guess we have a lot in common Janelle!

message 209: by Janelle (new)

Janelle (janelle5) | 756 comments Lol. I guess we do Yvonne. I do read fantasy, just not as much as I used to. I think I grew tired of repeated themes and ideas.
Actually, according to my Goodreads shelves, I've read more fantasy than sci fi. Perhaps I don't know my own mind.

Li He | 90 comments My native language is Chinese. I spent the first 35 years of my life in China where I had served in the Chinese army, worked as a bookbinder in a library, studied English language (and literature) in university, worked for a government institution and then for an import and export company for some years before moving abroad. My home now is Brisbane, Australia.

I have a passion for learning language (English) and reading about other people's lives in books. I hope one day I will achieve near-native proficiency in English and will also be able to appreciate those famous literary works that have been intimidating me because I don't feel up to the task of fully appreciating them. I'm still learning the basic business of how to read books.

message 218: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2706 comments Li, a warm, though belated, welcome to you! We're glad you've made yourself at home here, and joined in the discussions on some of the threads.

message 219: by Donnally (new)

Donnally Miller | 331 comments Hello, I am a new member. My name is Donnally Miller. All my life I have taken a deep interest in the classics of literature, philosophy, history, natural science, etc. I have also recently retired, and written a novel, something I had never attempted before. Judging from the reviews I am getting, most people find it difficult to read due to the literary style of the writing, and the numerous passages related to philosophical questions.
I am interested in getting to know other members and learning what their interests are. I am always looking for new viewpoints and new, intriguing things to read.

message 220: by Reggia (new)

Reggia | 2537 comments Welcome Donnally! Good to have you with us... please join in the conversation. :-)

message 222: by Bionic Jean (last edited Jan 10, 2020 01:26AM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 58 comments Hello everyone! I'm Jean and have been invited to join "Litwits" (fabulous name!) by my good Goodreads friend, Werner :) I've spent a while reading through a few threads, and like what I see, and think I may be lucky enough to be your first new member this year ...

I may seem a little outside your regular membership, and am hoping you will further broaden my horizons. I'm English for a start, and my reading is ... well eclectic may be a kind word for it! My first love is the Classics, and especially anything written by Charles Dickens. Having said that though, I have a soft spot for children's books, so my "currently reading" at any time may not be as you might expect. This last year has been a tough one for me, fighting cancer for the third time, so although I've kept my reading going, and read half a dozen classics, I haven't pushed it.

My reading is largely by English authors - not by intention - but just a long-instilled habit! When I was at school (many aeons ago), reading any authors in translation was looked down on, and my French and German never got fluent enough to study their classics. The subject was "English Literature" (rather than "Literature in English") so American literature was never mentioned. Joining Goodreads a few years ago was an eyeopener to me - and continues to be so - with many authors of whom I had never heard.

I've only been in 8 groups overall (not counting "Moderators" and "Librarians"): 3 general, 3 classics, 1 English Mysteries, and 1 Dickens. Oddly, two of them rose from the ashes of two others! But I do leave a group if I find I am not participating. Since joining GR, I now write a review of every book I read, and it really helps me to remember them.

I'm not sure how much to write here. I'm retired, and although earlier in life worked at various things, for most of it I was a class teacher at different schools in inner London, eventually becoming a deputy head. I've been married to Chris for 46 years and a few days (I just had to ask him how long, which he found really funny, and said we'd "been going together for more than 50" :D). We met as children at a Baptist Church, and are from largely Baptist families, (with a bit of Methodist, Salvation Army, Plymouth Brethren and Jehovah's Witnesses thrown in) although neither of us is religious now. Chris went to Oxford University, but now writes comic fantasy novels (and the odd Philosophy paper). Such is life! He is also on Goodreads, but we are careful not to be in the same groups ;) We are ethical vegetarians, (non-proselytising!) and have had quite a menagerie of animals over the years, but sadly at the moment find ourselves with none, awaiting a lovely dog from Romania, who isn't quite socialised enough to be brought over yet.

I hope to pop in now and then, although most of my time on Goodreads is spent co-moderating another group. Having said that, I am looking forward to a change of pace and role, and getting to know some of you. And if I'm not being too cheeky, maybe you could find me a little corner to store some of my (conceptual) things, please?

message 223: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2706 comments Jean, I'm so glad you've joined us; welcome! (Don't worry; you'll fit in here just fine. :-) ) Folks, Jean's introduced herself already; all I can add is that she's an all-around nice lady, and not just a "Goodreads friend," but one I count as a actual friend.

Jean wrote: "maybe you could find me a little corner to store some of my (conceptual) things, please?"

Actually, in this group you don't have to be a moderator to start a thread (though of course you have to be one to set up a folder). I'll personal message you, and we'll put our heads together to figure out what you need!

message 224: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 58 comments Thank you Werner :)

message 225: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2706 comments You're very welcome, Jean!

message 226: by James (new)

James Steele Hey all! My name's James. I'm from Utah and am currently in my first year of high school (well... online school, now, courtesy of Covid-19). I love a good read and particularly enjoy sci-fi, speculative fiction, philosophy, and fantasy. Among other things, I also enjoy music (both listening and playing), all things running, and BJJ. Past that, I guess it's weird to talk about yourself (haha)…

Anyways, probably even more so than I appreciate a good read, I love to discuss intriguing concepts/ideas that I find in literature. Warning: I can be a bit nerdy when it comes to these things, but, hey, wear it with pride, right?

message 227: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2706 comments James, welcome to the group; we're glad you've found us and joined in! Just make yourself right at home here; check out our discussion threads, and share your thoughts wherever you want to. (I can be a bit nerdy myself, so you'll have company. Nerds of the world, unite! :-) ) One question, because I'm terrible at deciphering abbreviations: what does BJJ stand for? (I know I'll kick myself for failing to see the obvious once you explain it, but for now I'm drawing a blank.)

message 228: by James (new)

James Steele You're good👍 It stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (aka Grappling).

message 229: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2706 comments Steele wrote: "You're good👍 It stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (aka Grappling)."

Thanks, James! (This time, I honestly didn't have to kick myself --that's one I'd never have been able to deduce without being told. :-) )

message 230: by Samuel (new)

Samuel Edme (sammythecritic) | 29 comments My name is Samuel and I am from Brooklyn, NY and staying in Togo for the moment. I'm currently a first-year student majoring in English at the online university TESU (Thomas Edison State University). I'll read just about anything which piques my interest which is usually graphic novels/comics, the classics, and sometimes prose nonfiction. Often, I listen to various types of music while reading to enhance the experience.

message 231: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2706 comments Samuel, welcome to the group; we're glad you've joined us! Just make yourself right at home, and join in the conversation whenever and wherever you feel like it (I see you've already found and posted on one of the threads). Hope your experience with this group proves rewarding! (You'll find several other members here who get into reading classics and prose nonfiction; and we even have a folder that includes some music-related threads, here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... .

Samuel Edme (sammythecritic) | 29 comments Charly wrote: "Samuel and James. Glad to have you as part of our group. If you are a reader, despite what some think, you can't be a nerd because every moment reading makes you an explorer, an adventurer and more..."

Thanks! As you said, reading doesn't mean you're a nerd at all. Otherwise, that would make trashy romance novel and gossip magazine readers nerds too.

message 233: by Peggy (new)

Peggy | 61 comments Hello everyone. I've been here before but it was a long time ago. In the last 10 years I moved 5 times and battled serious health issues. I am hoping we're settled now and I'm trying to get back to my "normal." I used to be a homeschool mom, but my boys are both grown up and I have 4 grandchildren who I don't get to see nearly enough.

I read a little bit of anything and everything. Reggia invited me and I am really grateful she reached out to me.

message 234: by Werner (new)

Werner | 2706 comments Peggy, welcome back to the group; we're really glad you've rejoined us! Hoping you can settle in now, enjoy better health, and get to see your grandkids more. (And that you get to do a lot of enjoyable reading, and share your thoughts about it with us!)

message 238: by Donnally (new)

Donnally Miller | 331 comments I'm also a fan of Virginia Woolf. I think she is one of the best essayists in English literature. I've particularly enjoyed The Second Common Reader and The Death of the Moth and Other Essays. I've never read To the Lighthouse, but plan to get to it any day now. Like others in this group there are any number of books I plan to read.

message 239: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) | 58 comments Welcome to everyone I've missed! I am a recent member myself, but love the relaxed pace of this group.

I hope that those of you who have had big troubles in your recent life are on your way to a "new normal" of enjoying things, and sharing our reading helps a little bit :)

It's more than "alright," Johanna; we're very glad to have you join us! (Don't worry about making language mistakes; we have other members for whom English isn't their native language either. The more you practice using English, the easier it will come; and you can practice on us anytime! :-) ). Yes, we got started as a group back in, I think, 2009, and we're still pretty active. Make yourself right at home; check out our discussion threads, and comment wherever you want to. We look forward to getting to know you!

Eleyne-Mari Sharp (writelighter) | 25 comments I am a writer who loves to read (especially the classics), but I’ve been so busy writing that I rarely read for fun. The last fiction books I read were "Where the Crawdads Sing" (I loved it!) and "The Scent Keeper."

I was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and lived in Texas, Alaska, Mississippi, Italy, and Germany during my first 17 years. I moved to Rhode Island in 1990 where I live with my retired British yacht captain husband and our two mischievous little kitties.

Living a joyful life is very important to me and I can’t imagine my life without BOOKS!

justin | 1 comments Hey y’all, the name’s Justin, from North Georgia, and I’m 22 years old. I’d recently decided to take reading a little more seriously a couple months ago, and I have a bookshelf of books to read now. I was struggling with a serious tech addiction, am currently struggling with a drug addiction I really would like to succeed in overcoming, and found that reading helped me not use my phone so much when I was at home.

Enough with that stuff though, you might be wondering what type of books am I interested in. I’m interested in intimately getting to know essential classics like Thus Spoke Zarathustra, War and Peace, The Count of Monte Cristo, and The Divine Comedy. I also love Science Fiction (especially dystopian Sci-fi), Fantasy, Religious texts, Witchcraft/Occult texts, and world mythology. Looking forward to possibly getting to know some people here and learning about new books I haven’t read yet!

Where addictions are concerned, you have to hang in there and fight them one day at a time; but you undoubtedly know that already. (If you need a listening ear at times, you can personal-message me --I've sometimes been told I'm a good listener, for whatever that's worth.) Kind thoughts and prayers!

Hi Cosmic.
Hi All.
Stopping in for rest of the year. I need relaxing place. This year has presented some medical issues that are temporary. Thank you God. For now I need less encouragement to read and more encouragement to enjoy reading.

Imagining that soon enough I will be enjoying ☀️🌳🌻🪴
