Reina Williams Sorry if this has been asked...I searched the threads and manual, but couldn't find an answer.
A self-published friend has changed the title and cover for one of her books, but not for the paperback edition. If she deletes the paperback edition, will she lose the ratings and reviews posted for that edition, or will they stay on the ebook edition, since they had been combined? Many thanks for any info!

Krystal109 | 1086 comments They would be transferred to the other edition if they were combined, but we do not delete actual books. This is an archive. If she published a book in paperback form it should stay on GR's.

Please do NOT delete books unless you have evidence that it was never published or is not a real book.

Thanks! I'll let her know. So, is it okay for an author to update the title and cover, though, assuming they are using the same ISBN? I'm going to be changing an ebook cover myself soon, and she's thinking of changing the cover and title of the paperback. Thanks again.

Amanda | 2442 comments Actually in both cases we would create an alternate cover edition of the books and combine with the originals. This way users can shelve the cover/title they own, but the reviews are shared across all the editions.

Thanks! I'll be sure to do that when I change my ebook cover. I think she may have already altered hers. But I'll let her know to leave all editions & just add an alternate cover edition if she updates the paperback.

Krystal109 | 1086 comments Basically anytime she makes a new cover change, there needs to be a new edition, even if it uses the same ISBN. We never "UPDATE" a book.

Think of GR's as an archive of book information, rather than a promotion site.

Reina Williams I don't view GR as a promotion site. I was on here as a reader first. I'm still learning and want to do the best I can as a GR librarian and user--that's why I posted the question. I appreciate the information.

Lobstergirl There really should be something in the manual about it, if there isn't. (Not under creating an Alternate Cover, because people wouldn't necessarily know to look there. Maybe a section titled should I delete, when can I delete, DO NOT DELETE, .... something involving the word delete.) I looked very quickly and didn't see anything. But enough people ask the question that it should be in writing!

I completely agree here. I was looking through the manual also and it's pretty scarce when it comes to guidelines for deleting, NABing or "updating". That would be a very helpful addition to the manual!

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments There is a thread dedicated to changes to the librarians manual. Feel free to start a new topic with draft wording of additions you think appropriate, it is then debated and if accepted rivka will add to the manual when she has time.

Krystal109 | 1086 comments I think a lot of authors use GR's as a promotional site, that is what I was trying to say, but that is just a side effect of what GR's does.

It's almost always authors that come with this question of updating their books. Should there be a guide for authors that they need to read when they claim their author pages? This would help them understand their abilities and what should and should not be done.

I thinkt that would be a good idea. There are so many cover changes enquiries from authors that it would be great if we don't have to tell each and every one that we don't do that.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments There is a whole host of information provided to authors - some available to view by clicking the author program link. I doubt they read half of it never mind additonal items.

Despite that - updating the author information is a GR Feedback Group issue rather than librarian one, so I would suggest a post there
