Lily (joy1) | 5241 comments You're right, this belongs in the tea room, but let me say here, if you like museums at all, missing the Met in NYC is rather like missing the Louvre in Paris. You can have a wonderful trip and see many memorable things, but ...

Oh, you infernal people! lol. With every post you make the idea seem more and more like a really good idea. I think of NY and I think of The World Trade Center, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the HISTORY from the 1700s and 1800s, and the thought that there must be a really good deli there somewhere. mmmm.

Tell me, Muse, of the corned beef on rye...

I'm beginning to think we've found a site for a face-to-face rendezvous.

Barbara (barbarasc) | 114 comments OH NO!!!! I've been "out of the loop" for the past few weeks -- a combination of crazy deadlines in my business and I've been VERY "under the weather" -- I've had a horrible cold (maybe a flu) for the past two weeks.

Anyway, I stopped by to see what I've been missing here, maybe around a week ago, but I didn't realize I missed out on a whole discussion on NEW YORK CITY!!! (MY city!!! hahaha!!!)

By the way, what is the "Tea Room"??? I saw a few posts saying that these posts should be in the Tea Room, but I haven't seen a "Tea Room" thread in this group.

Well, I'd love to respond to some of the "NY related" comments!! I hope it's OK if I respond here in this thread!!!

What a treat, Barbara, thank you so much! I've never been to New York. But if I do get there someday, I'm going to The Met."

Adelle, I agree with what Lily said in Message 146. Come to New York!!! And if you need a "tour guide" of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (and many of the other museums) as long as I'm not on one of my "crazy deadlines" I would LOVE to save you the time of looking through the museum maps. I don't mean to "brag" but I know every nook and cranny of the Met Museum. I'd LOVE to show you around.

I also am pretty familiar with the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Frick Collection (the Frick is small, but has some fabulous paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts.)

When I was still married, my husband and I went to Paris (first time for both of us) and we spent some time at the Louvre, but with such a large museum (I think the Met and the Louvre are around the same size -- if not, the Louvre might be slightly larger), we really needed to go back a few days in a row to really get to see all that we wanted to see. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to go there more than once, but we did get to see a good amount of their magnificent collection.

I would love to spend a month in Paris!!! Maybe I could make that happen at some point, but now is definitely not a time that I could do that!!!

Other cities that I've been to, and had the opportunity to go to their great museums, are Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, London, and Amsterdam. I lived in San Francisco for a few years, and there are some good museums there, but none of the SF museums compare to NY, Paris, and the other five cities I just mentioned. (There are plenty of cities I have NOT been to that have wonderful museums -- but I may have to settle with looking at the work of some of those museums in some great coffee table art books!!!)

It was SO LONG AGO, but I went to the Greek museum in Nashville (which is definitely a strange location for Greek art!!!) I have to look it up -- I'm not even sure if it's still there, but I think it was called the Parthenon. Has anyone here been there???

By the way, my "free tour-guide" service is an open offer to ALL of the wonderful people in this group!!! Just get on a plane and come to NEW YORK!!!!

And yes, the Elgin marbles at the British Museum ... worth the trip just to see those! Magical!"

Hi Patrice! The new Greek and Roman galleries?? (Well, they opened around six years ago, I think, so I guess they're not so new anymore!!!) Was there a Roman Egypt exhibit?? I can't keep up with that place!!! They really ALWAYS have so many fantastic exhibits, and even living here it's difficult to get to all the exhibits!!

We could have been standing right next to each other!!! The world is MUCH smaller than it seems!!

I'm ashamed to say that although I've been to London and have seen some great things there, I MISSED the Elgin Marbles!!! I need to go back to London just to see them!!!

When will you be back in NY????

Welcome back, Barbara.

Lol...I think we try...well...most of the time...to keep the discussions discussion related. But if people are veering too far off the path, then there is a structure set up for that, yes...The Tea Room! Because anything can be dscssed over tea.

When you go into Classics and Western Canon, towards the top of the page you will see the threads for The Aeneid. A little further down, you will see some threads dor General Discussions. And a little further dwn the screen from there you will see a rhread labeled Tea Room. Always open and open for casual conversation.

I think that is an acceptable explanation, but if I forgot something, someone will correct me.

Again, nice to see you back.

Barbara (barbarasc) | 114 comments Thanks Adelle and Patrice!!!

I will head over to the tea room for further discussions on museums!!!

As far as The Aeneid, I have REALLY fallen behind. I'll still be posting in the different threads for each book of The Aeneid in 2013 at the rate I'm going!!! (As long as I finish before 2014!!!!)

It's fantastic and I will definitely read ALL OF IT (although, for some reason I've been stuck in Book Three for a long time, so I will head over to the Book Three thread sometime soon.)

Are there any other stragglers here, or have I fallen too far behind????

message 110: by [deleted user] (new)

Mmmm, Virgil wrote it in 27 BC...so I'd say we're all behind.

Tell you what, though, you post thoughts and I'll try to respond.

And Book 4 is a fabulous Book.

Thomas, you're not a real New Yorker if you don't have it with plenty of mustard, and you need to have a pickle and cole slaw on the side!!!

OK -- I promise from now on to keep all "off topics" to the tea room!!!

Adelle -- Thank you!!!!! I'm looking forward to Book Four!!!
