question
How do you feel about this book now that Lehrer has admitted to fabricating quotes?

I have been spending my summer, essentially sipping this book and am dismayed and hurt to find out that Lehrer made up quotes. I feel like my trust has been violated. I'm roughly half-way through the book and still want to finish it though. How do others feel?

Even if the quotes were off, there are some scientific studies included in here that really quite amazing. For all of the author's faults, he is good at breaking down complex data and explaining it in an easier way.
I'm definitely disappointed, but I still learned quite a bit.

I didn't read everyone's posts and I didn't look up any of the articles on this issue. Do we know which quotes Lehrer fabricated? Are there other parts of the book fabricated? I feel it is impossible to tell how much is lost without knowing specifically what is made up and what is not.
I'm quite disappointed...

Fabrications aside, I wasn't that impressed with the book. Yes he writes well, but by the end I didn't feel I'd learned much that was new or felt like I better understood the mysteries of creativity. This guy somehow manages to generate buzz, good and bad.

Like many of the previous commenters I enjoyed the book, Learning about the fake quotes did not detract much for me. That the book itself was retracted seems an over reaction.
I find it ironic, though, that the author of "Creativity" lost his job for being overly creative.

I agree that 1. Fabricating quotes is wrong 2. The book is still a good read.
Ha! Thanks for this alert. Just goes to show: Grub-Street hacks lurk everywhere. Overweening competition for fame in the digital marketplace...sheeesh, I don't know that there's any living author I trust anymore.
I agree with Robert. Dylan was a small part and the book was very interesting and insightful (if you ignore the Dylan issue). I particularly liked the Section on Steve Jobs and his ideas about having dialog in his company. Wish my worksite would think like that.
I liked it because I had all the qualities of a creative person. Had a fun time ego-tripping. Alas, it turns out not to be true.
On hearing this news I was a little confussed as to why an authour would fake quotes. It seemed to me that alot of the quotes did not add to the points Lehrer was trying to make.
Well this is a shock. I hadn't heard the news until now. Now I have to go and find out what was a fib.
What a rip. I had held this book in such high regard. It's hard to say how the truth will affect this standing.
Updated.
After reading about the changes I can't say it will be much of a real game changer as the Dylan portions amounted to what I considered to be the weakest portion of the book. That being said, anything that fell under Lehrer's purview is now suspect. According to the article his fabrications were plenty not just in the book. This leads me to be distrustful of all his work.
Such a shame.

Happy I got to read it for free through the library.
I heard that he lied when I was halfway through reading Imagine. I finished it anyway. The problem now is I don't know what to believe and what not to believe. And, yes, I could follow up on his sources and notes but who wants to put in the effort? I'm sure there's plenty of truth in the book, and it was a good read, but now I have to take everything I learned from it with a grain of salt. I'm not sure if Imagine was really worth the bad, briny taste of doubt it left in my mouth.
I love this book. It is fascinating and exceptionally well written. While fabricating quotes is absolutely wrong and shouldn't have been done, it doesn't detract from the science of the book. I think the publishers over-reacted by pulling all the books from the shelves. Jonah Lehrer is a great talent. I hope he keeps writing.
I have read this book, and even though I am greatly disappointed, I still consider this book to be a good one.
Outside the problems with the quotes in the book, Mr. Lehrer does an amazing job of explaining how the brain handles creativity in its many forms. After reading this, I feel like I am more able to understand and tap into the creative aspects of my mind that I had difficulty accessing before.
I guess I would still recommend that people read the book.

I'm going to try to ask a question, and hopefully I won't put my foot in my mouth by asking it...after the breaking of this story, I'm wondering how other GoodRead members now see the Lehrer book. After seeing all of the impassioned responses on GoodReads prior to the news, I am thinking of keeping my place in the library hold list, but Kara's comment seemed to hit the nail on the head of my hesitation. I have so many books in my to-read wish list that I have to wonder if I should invest the time in this book that I might spend on another book. If I were to read this...is it still a good investment, and how much do members trust the author's writing that wasn't fabricated? Again, this is just my curiosity working...in the midst of the fact that I am still disappointed in Lehrer's "shortcut."
I legitimately finished it yesterday. Very disappointed but it was still a good read.
I'd been planning to read this one but decided not to after I heard. There are so many wonderful books to read written by authors with integrity that I didn't see why I should spend my time and money on this one. It was disappointing and an unfortunately common occurrence.
This isn't to say that I'll never read anything by Lehrer--I would be happy to give him a shot with his next book if he can refrain from these questionable practices.
