okay,im not sure how to handle this. if there are two books in one, how is this to be done? i would like a way that makes sure that having marked this book read both books appear as read in any given list. the same is true for series like narnia, were having marked the entire series read the single volumes still show in the list.

Find or add the 2-in-1 edition and mark it as read. The single editions will not appear as read because we can't combine the editions.
You kind of have to decide if you want YOUR edition marked as read or the individual books marked as read. Sadly, there is no way to mark a box set or omnibus edition and have the individual books marked, unless you mark the individual editions AND the omnibus edition. What bugs me is that the box sets and omnibus versions count as 1 book, when it may be more... it kind of makes my total read number be off and having that count off.

Now I can "read" the individuals. When I get my act together and start to shelve 10,000 books I will have a shelf called "in an omnibus" which won't refer to reading them on a bus but to the titles in the omnibus editions on my shelves.
