A few discussion points came up in another group when this book was discussed. Is this story 'all about the women'?
What is the 'magic realism' in the book and does it mean anything?
What did people think of Esteban?
(We decided he was a cock (US:rooster) or a donkey.)

Thank you, Val! for starting us off :). I'll think about the questions "Is this story 'all about the women?'" as I read it.
I don't think I've read anything 'magic realism' before... What did you think about Allende's style of magical realism, Val?
Magic realism is a style used by quite a few Latin American writers and it usually has some symbolic meaning. I have a feeling Allende is not doing that, she is adding in some magic realism elements more for fun than anything else. That could just mean I didn't get the symbolic meaning. I would be interested to hear what the rest of you think when you have read some of it. (The magic realism bits are all near the start of the book.)
Hi everyone, thanks for introducing me to Isabel Allende, I absolutely loved this book. It just felt like a big cozy dressing gown, I was enraptured by the characters and the writing style. What did everyone else think?
