B. P. Rinehart (ken_mot) | 59 comments Hello I am new to this group and I thought this would be the best place to post this since no one responded to me in the new members thread.

I have just finished reading Crime and Punishment and have to new choices for my next Russian book. On the one hand I had stopped reading The Brothers Karamazov (which I really liked) for C&P, but I have also been holding on to a copy of Chekhov's The Major Plays for a long time and gave only read his short stories. I would really appreciate any one's advice on this so I can expand my Russian lit a little more.

Soad (jumping_crickets) | 35 comments hi Ken I think that you should finish The Brothers Karamazov, it would be a shame left unfinished.

B. P. Rinehart (ken_mot) | 59 comments Thanks Soad. That was the plan until I remembered I had the Chekhov book and realized I have never read a play by him. But I hope I can put those on hold long enough for TBK. I also wonder if I should read any other books (which is my usual habit) while reading this one?

Soad (jumping_crickets) | 35 comments Read TBK, and keep up with the group reads, you cant read everything all at once it takes the fun out of it I've only read one of Chekhov's plays The Cherry Orchard and It was more upbeat then most Russian books that i have read though I'm just a newbie with this form of literature.

B. P. Rinehart (ken_mot) | 59 comments Alright I think I'll just start from where I left off from the 'Elders' chapter then, thanks for the input.

Tom | 73 comments God, yes, do finish BK. If it's "expansion" you're after, nothing will expand your mind more than that soul-bending novel. And when you've finished and floated out the back door, take a left and follow the dirt alley down to corner pub for a couple or five shots of Gogol, chased with draught of Turgenev's Sketches from a Sportsman's Notebook, all washed down with a snifter of Akhmatova and Mandelstam. No zoning laws will ever confine you again after that pilgrimage of expansion (or this thicket of mixed metaphors).

B. P. Rinehart (ken_mot) | 59 comments Lol ok then! I guess that settled it 'Brothers' than Chekhov. I did download some short stories from Gogol and will probably be reading those as well.

Also I would encourage everyone to please go back to the New Members corner and read my introduction.

B. P. Rinehart (ken_mot) | 59 comments Has anyone here read TBK? If so would you be interested in discussing it with me or simply entertaining my thoughts? If so you can respond here or message me personally.

Oh, I had assumed it was already discussed in the group reads. Being new etc. The thing is since I'm in school and am taking a lit class no less I won't be able to dedicated as much time to reading TBK as I would like. Usually after I read a good amount I update it on my profiles I have done today. I'll see what can do.

If you go in the book page of TBK (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49...) you can see at the bottom all the discussions on GR that talk about The Brothers Karamazov. If you want you can also open a discussion about the book from there.
Another possibility is that you go on your homepage and on the top, in the middle of the page, you click on (showing:) "books". So you can see if someone has opened a discussion about TBK outside a group; but this only if you have shelved TBK as read or currently reading (if I don't remember wrong).

Thanks for the help on this.

K Gomez | 2 comments Humiliated and Insulted by Fydor Dostoevsky is little-known, being one of D's earlier works, but it's actually one of my favourite novels ever. It's also very simple to keep up with and properly appreciate. It's also easily available, having just been reissued. :-)

I'll be sure to look it up.

B. P. Rinehart (ken_mot) | 59 comments I guess since this has become my semi-official thread for "Super Karamazov Bros" I'll ask this question here, is there any "filler" in this book?

I have read 151 pages so far and it has been meat-no fat to be found. I'm (pleasantly) simply surprised by the that; most books, especially from this era always have a section of the book for the reader to breathe or get distracted while the next part of the plot is being readied. Not here. Best you cam get are a few lines of exposition/description then it's back to action. Now don't get me wrong I have read "Notes From Underground" which was 100 pages of sharp psychoanalysis but I am very impressed so far and I want to know if this is just early in the book and I am just getting to eager? (No spoilers please).

B. P. Rinehart (ken_mot) | 59 comments Okay so I've made an official The Brothers Karamazov thread so mods can zap this one.

Anatoliy Obraztsov (obraztsov) | 3 comments Try new Russian authors. They are very perspective. For example look at http://www.amazon.com/crossing-drops-...
