Can Psmith tell when you say his name without the "P"?

Allie | 14 comments It's a common bit of trivia that Psmith can tell when you say his name wrong ("Smith" instead of "Psmith"). Stephen Fry even mentioned it on the show "QI". However, having now read all the Psmith books, I can't remember one occasion when he called anyone out on it. The other characters--even his closest friend Mike and his beloved Eve Halliday!--don't take the "silent P" shtick seriously and invariably refer to him as "Smith" in their dialogue. The only exception is Freddie Threepwood--who, after all, saw Psmith's name before he ever heard it spoken.

So is this just another thing like that deerstalker hat that Sherlock Holmes never actually had? My guess is people are thinking of the Mr. Mulliner story "A Slice of Life", where a man named ffinch-ffarrowmere could tell when you weren't using the right amount of lowercase "f"s. But maybe there's a dialogue or something that I missed.
