Sydney Did you want her to stay with Adien? After seeing so many movies and reading so many books I was dissapointed. I wish she stayed with him. But another part of me sees why Annette did that.

Dhfan4life I read this a long time ago back in high school. But I do agree with you, that I did want her to stay with Adien. Although in a sense the pack leader seemed pretty reasonable in a way. More so than in the movie and why she left with the human guy.

I know I watched the movie and loved it so I bought the book.I hated the book.I was so disappointed and the only reason I finished it was because I payed full price.

Currer Jean No. Not at all. Aiden was the embodiment of everything that is wwrong with high school, kids being kids and playing with things that they don't understand. Trust me I'm still in high school. By choosing Gabriel she broke free of those conventions. Aiden was a child who thought it was fun to be a bit rebellious but at the end of the day his go to girl Kelly still slept in a pink room. Kids will be kids and Aiden hadn't grown up.

Gerd I kind of liked the movie, but I watched it before I ordered the book - it is an okay romance (disclaimer: my opinion of the movie might have been influenced by how sore a disappointment I felt "Skinwalkers" to be).

But yeah, the book makes more sense than the movie, and I think it works better with out them ending up together.

message 8: by Yue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Yue I was Gabriel-team all the way. I did not like Aiden; first of all, he made her feel not good about her true nature; secondly, he was human, and I am getting tired of supernatural stories where the werewolf falls in love with the human. Gabriel was like her, they were proud of who they were, there was no reason for Vivian to hide anything. Aaaaand, he was much more hotter than Aiden (who was just a wimpy kid)

As for the movie, I think it was terrible (and I watched the movie before I read the book). I did not like the story nor the characters.

Sydney Thanks guys. I know how you feel. Part of me was glad but part of me was upset.

Dhfan4life But aren't we forgetting that Gabriel was with her aunt or some other really trampy pack member that had the son that was always a jerk to her? I also wasn't feeling Gabriel cause to me it was a rather strange aspect to put in a book. A teen with someone that seemed so much older and more adult. I know they are playing it off in some modern shows like Pretty Little Liars with one of the characters that is into her English Teacher and often times when it is a high school girl that is into a college guy. But still seemed so strange to me. And although I get Aiden was childish and immature in his own right as a kid. I still think Vivian should have stayed in her lane and been with him. Could have grew and got more from that and then if there was a second book with her older come back around to Gabriel. But to end up with Gabriel right off the bat was just ewwie and weird as heck to me. Felt that way as a teen and still do now. Teens should be with teens and not adults, this isn't the days of old where you have to get married or involved that early in life so no need to put that in a teen/YA book.

message 11: by Kat (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kat Liked Aiden. Loved Gabriel. Book trumps movie.

Dhfan4life Even if it wasn't with Aiden though she should have still found someone in her own lane. Were or other wise. I just like the conotation that she could only have found herself with this older guy. Just sends a message that you aren't fully validated until someone older and more worldly says you are enough.

Dhfan4life I was pretty mature as a teen too. But there are still times where one isn't always mature for all things. And I get the message that was trying to be conveyed. But sometimes even tradition and those of your own kind can be just as stifling and suppressing in and of itself and don't always foster much growth. So I'll concede the point that maybe there is something ok in Gabriel. But still could have found it in someone else. I'm just that stubborn. :P And will hold to the fact that this book is far better than the Twilight madness.

1. Book is waayyy better than the movie.

2. I felt that there was more of a connection between Vivian and Gabriel than she had with Aiden. Plus, Gabriel was wayyy hotter.

Sydney Thanks. I will ponder your thoughts and ideas. I still wish she could be with Aiden, but I understand she was growing up.

Sláinte Wanderlust I will never watch the movie of this book - i know sometimes that books can work as films but other times, yeah not so much.

I really did not want her to end up with the dumbass boy as he really did not seem right for her. F.F.S. he was willing to shoot her! He also ran off & made out with another girl asap. Match made in heaven i think not.
Viv had needs that no human could understand or cope with. That is why Gabriel works, it also helps that he had been there done that with a human, so could even help with that.

Ashley-Anne Brittany wrote: "No. Not at all. Aiden was the embodiment of everything that is wwrong with high school, kids being kids and playing with things that they don't understand. ..."

amen buddy! I hated Aiden he was a little punkass and didnt deserve vivian. Gabriel was her match in all aspects. and aidens friends were dumb, especially the two who totally dumped vivian because Aiden made up a bunch of shit about her.

Yeah for fuck sake.
Aiden did not deserve Viv at all. He is a total dick i really do not understand why people would want them to end up together. He practically peed his pants when she turned wolf - pathetic.

Dhfan4life As if everyday we see people turning into something OTHER than a back stabber or a mooch.

Sláinte Wanderlust Dhfan4life wrote: "As if everyday we see people turning into something OTHER than a back stabber or a mooch."

I am not saying if my boyfriend turned into a werewolf i wouldn't be scared, I would be no doubt.
However if i was at the stage in the relationship were i was planning on having sex with him (which IMO is a serious commitment) i know i wouldn't of reacted as badly as Aiden did. I also would not of broken up with/lied/bitched about him because of wolfing out without at least speaking to him (infact i doubt i would do that at all).
How old is Aiden anyway?

message 23: by Dhfan4life (last edited Jul 31, 2012 03:32PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dhfan4life He's 15 or 16 so I thought, been a while since I read it. So asking him to be too mature about things would be asking a lot. And besides for most guys around that age they say about anything to get laid. So although Aiden may not have been perfect per se. I still think Viv needed that experience a bit. To sure up what she was really after. Instead of Gabriel seeming to be waiting with open arms for her to come to him like he was waiting since the very first.

Sláinte Wanderlust Well i disagree about the maturity part where i live people can get married, have babies, smoke etc at 16 - things i think you have to be mature to do.

I do think that Viv needed the experience to show her what she actually needed. It is one thing to be told or shown something & an entirely different thing to live it. She was missing something in her life before she tried to be with Aiden. (IMO) Aiden helped show Vivian that she needed more than a human had to offer & also what a human was really like as before that she didn't really know.

Dhfan4life In certain places here folks can get married with parental consent young, don't even need parental consent to have the babies or the smoking. But I do agree you need maturity for all of that. Just most would think they are mature enough for it, when in reality they are just fibbing to themselves and others so they can appear grown up I think.

That aside, has any of you guys read Silver Kiss by the same author? A vamp story with a babysitter I believe getting turned by her vamp boss.

Gerd Shona wrote: "I am not saying if my boyfriend turned into a werewolf i wouldn't be scared, I would b..."

Well, in Aiden's defense, she didn't exactly give him a lot of warning.
And if wanted to sleep with a girl I would want to sleep with her, not see her wolf out, because that probably might be a wee bit of a mood killer. :)

Shona wrote: "Well i disagree about the maturity part where i live people can get married, have babies, smoke etc at 16 - things i think you have to be mature to do..."

No, only should.
People are allowed to marry for the most stupid reasons, not to mention have children, so maturity is the last thing people call for there - for some "willing" seems to be all they want from their future partner.

Laura Graber I guess I had an entirely different perspective. Of course, I read this book when my son (third child) brought it home from High School. I thought that Gabriel understood the Wolf component - the differences in canine societal structure as opposed to human. The "other women" were nothing but a reaction to the offer. Viv was the special one - the "mate". I thought Gabriel was the much better choice, for the practical reasons mentioned previously as well as the ones I've posted, and because he would understand her emotionally much better than Aiden ever would. In fact, I thought the whole book was a coming-of-age story about Vivian, and her teenaged angst, and how she grew up and got real.

message 28: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim Aiden was cool in the beginning, but at the end of the day he couldn't accept her true self. He tried to kill her!

Gabriel was a dick in the beginning but he really did care. Viv and Gabriel mesh. He's the muscle and the discipline and she's the compassion.

Elodie Vidal When I first read this book, the ending weirded me out: there's something deeply disturbing about Vivian ending up with someone so much older, and whom she seems to dislike so much. Now, on the other hand, I see that this ending makes the book stand out from other YA novels: Kurtis Clause did not go for the fairy tale, unrealistic ending, but for the realistic, mature one. People who are different rarely end up with people who fit in the mould. Vivian needed someone who was also different and had had the experience of being rejected (that's Gabriel).

The only thing that bothers me now is that by accepting Gabriel, she also yielded to the traditions from which she wanted to distance herself. Not really a good message to teen girls trying to come into their own.

agreed!

Leonca It’s been a while since I read this, but I was in the target audience at the time (mid-late teen girl). I remember being a bit creeped out by the ending and found the message disappointing. I didn’t like the “you need a man” aspect of it, as if there isn’t a third option of giving yourself time to grow up before looking for romance. I didn’t understand what the hurry was then, and I still don’t.

Kristen this is actually my favorite werewolf book and i think the people who made the movie ruined everything! they weren't suppose to be in Europe, the clan frowned up and even punished the members by death if they killed a human, Gabriel wasn't a douche bag and was never with Astrid. THERE IS SO MANY THINGS WRONG WITH THE MOVIE I WANTED TO BURN IT. The book is amazing even though some of the messages in there are weird but overall its still a GREAT book

message 33: by Liad (new)

Liad LOVED the book. I liked Aiden at first but was upset just like she was when he didn't accept her. I didnt like Gabriel at first because I thought he was just like the five but then ended up loving the ending and liking Gabriel and his affectionate and understanding nature toward her. The sexual addition to the book made it even more intense. HATED the movie. I wish they had made another one that actually followed the story line and setting. Unfortunately Twilight has ruined werewolf movies forever.

Moonlight I read the book as an adult. While I thought that Adian was cute but I liked Gabriel better. Adian was way over his head. As soon as he got what he said he wanted, he freaked. Not that that his reaction was unreasonable but facts are facts. She was a werewolf and needed someone who could accept that. In the book, she ended up with the right person.

Currer Jean Christina wrote: "Sydney wrote: "Did you want her to stay with Adien? After seeing so many movies and reading so many books I was dissapointed. I wish she stayed with him. But another part of me sees why Annette did..."

I totally agree with you. The ending was lovely.

This is definately true. In most YA books the supernatural usually ends up with the humans but this is the story of a supernatural who needs more understanding.

Griszll idk...I can't say that i'm disappointed in who she ended up with, I mean...I kind of see why it wouldn't have worked out...i didn't even know there was a movie, but i guess i don't want to watch it since they say its completely different...

I wish you would write a review. This is exactly how I felt about the book and how it realted to high school.

Kathleen I read the book in the fifth grade, because my reading level had far exceeded those of my peers. Even back then, I preferred Gabriel. He was understanding and patient. He respected tradition, while still respecting her. I think her ending up woth him was s gopd message for my developing brain.
Alternatively, the Adien was childish. He held little to no respect for her and spent energy on making her doubt herself and hate what she was. I could be remembering this wrong, but I believe he wet himself when she changed infont of him. The prev thought he was going to get lucky.
Gabriel was the much better catch.

Whereas the movie... well or made a bad guy into a mother figure. Killed off the mother, who was a driving plot point in the book. They made the respectful, patent, understanding hot guy into hwr creepy uncle. They changed tradition. They changed her relationship with the five. If I'm remembering right... and I might not be... didn't there book take place in New England, not Romania?

Joel Anderson The movie was terrible. Sorry to blanket-judge, but anyone who preferred it over the original novel has horrible taste.
