Oh wow I loved those things as a kid, and I've been getting my daughter into them. And of course I cheated. Well, first, I'd read it "naturally", picking the answers I wanted. Then I'd read with assumed optimization (as in, guessing what the author wants me to pick). Then I'd trace backwards through all of the options until I gleaned the best possible outcome, and tried to go forward again that way.
Yeah, I always cheated too. I remember I had 2 of them as a child--one about killer tomatoes, but that may just be my imagination. I always tried to get the best ending, but always ended up with the one where I gave up and went home.
I had dozens of 'em. I think they became my staple Scholastic order.Man, I should see if they're in a box around here somewhere and give 'em to my 6-year-old. She's done some junior-style ones at school and confessed cheating. I told her that's part of the fun!
Again, the schedule is all messed up because we can't find another person for the Dark Tower podcast. We'll be talking about CYOA books in most formats next week.
Ryan brought up a good question during the podcast. We all obviously enjoyed these books as children, but how could the be adapted for adults?

What was your favorite CYOA book? Did you cheat to get the "best ending?" (I know I did)
