SOLVED. A man does a drug study for money...[s]

I'm looking for a book I read probably 6-7 years ago. My best guess is that it was published in the late 90's or early 2000's. It was fiction about a 20 something guy who was working odd temporary jobs for money. He decides to go to a 30 day or so pharmaceutical study to make some extra money. I want to say he has a girlfriend he leaves when he goes to do this and he doesn't tell anyone else he is going. The study is the bulk of the book- he meets odd people and struggles with his mental state through the stay trying to decide if he has taken the placebo or not. The only other details I can think of is that he possibly lived in new York- took a bus up to the facility with the other study participants. The facility is in the woods. I recall the hardcover book being black and white- and I think it was the authors only book at the time. Hopefully someone knows this book- its been driving me crazy for years!
