It sounds like a slightly muddled version of The Meaning of Night by Micheal Cox. It's the right time period, the vengange angle, the wrongful inheritance, the protagonist getting kicked out of school ... if this isn't the book you're thinking of, it might be one you would enjoy reading.Good luck.
Hahaha, oh my god, that's it! You're amazing! This was my first time posting in this community, how fun. Thank you so much!!

I think it was set at least partially in London, England in the mid-late 19th century, but I could be wrong. The protagonist I think attended Oxford at some point, but I don't remember if he finished or got kicked out.
The story follows a young man from his youth into his adult years as he has his inheritance stolen from him and tries to figure out how to get it back. I think at first he doesn't want the inheritance and defies his father a bit, and does a bit of the prodigal son thing. Afterwards he gets screwed over by someone and from there you get the vengeance plot. I feel like there was a thing with letters being important, and (view spoiler)[there being an old mentor at Oxford that he goes back to talk to that dies. (hide spoiler)]
I'm sorry that this is super vague. I may also be mixing parts of this book with the sequel (at least I'm pretty darn sure there were two books).
