Jute | 238 comments I wasn't sure where to put this so it ended up here in off topic...

I'm pretty much a series addict..if I read one book I like I will read them all. I was wondering if 'the powers that be' would be interested in having a spinoff VF that discussed the rest of the books in a series if what we are reading is part of a larger group?

For instance the two picks this month are part of a series. Whatcha say?

I like this idea! I would 100% love to do this with In Death one month, after Bonnie and Veronica's months (I guess Oct).

DONT READ AHEAD! :D

message 3: by Alu (new)

Alu (tome_reader_alu) I just finally read Grave Witch and am actually looking into reading the more in this series. The idea sounds like it could be fun.

Jane Higginson | 180 comments As long as dont have to read an entire series in one month!! But yeah I like this idea :)

*puts the book down and slowly backs away*

If we do set this up, anything I can do to help, just let me know. I know they have a 'sister' group to the Goodreads group "Fantasy Book Club" called "Fantasy Book Club Series". I don't participate in either group so I don't exactly know how they work together but I saw them when trolling through the groups here the other day.

Justine | 56 comments I love series, too! In romance, I adore how the relationships between characters can build on each other and heighten the emotions in later stories. I thought that Sarah MacLean did this really well, drawing on the all of the relationships established in Nine and Ten so that the drama fairly crackled in Eleven Scandals to Start to Win a Duke's Heart.

In fantasy series, I enjoy the drawn out, shifting power struggles.

This is a long way of saying, pretty please, count me in for any spinoff group or discussion of series :)

Rune | 43 comments i think we could read a series on the side and have the main and alt reads going to and open conversation for the series as well. cause there are soooo many good vf series out there :D

Count me in!!

Sarah | 89 comments I'm almost done with the available books in the Sirantha Jax (Grimspace series, and I have loved the whole thing. When I get some more free time (ie am finished moving), I'll be picking up the next books in the Kushiel's series as well as the Daughter of the Blood series. And, since other's said the rest of the books int he series are good, Gabriel's Ghost and Iron Duke series may be after that, so..... yea, I'd totally be up for it!

There are definitely some series that I'd love to read more of, though I don't think I could always do it in a scheduled way.

I don't really see the need to make a spin-off group though, you could just keep discussing the series in the folder for the first book - that way people new to VF or people who aren't sure if they're completely interested in committing to reading the series can still see discussions without having to commit to another group. I know that personally I'm picky about joining GR Groups and only do when I know they are ones I will contribute to and get things out of - I'd be less likely to join a separate group that I would be to join in on conversations about series here.

Kathryn Weis | 60 comments I'm a series addict as well, I think I just hate when things end... which is why I'm a sucker for those huge behemoths that intimidate other people. I also love long TV series (Doctor Who).

I'm actually really enjoying the exposure to books I never otherwise would have picked up. Too often I won't pick up trashy romances because I'm judgmental and I've found quite a few through VF that I've really enjoyed and NEVER would have picked up otherwise. So thank you ladies!

message 11: by jillz (new)

jillz (jillzz) I have continued reading the rest of the books in our series picks and would love to discuss some of them with people.

I also wouldn't mind if some of our picks down the road were later books in series we already read. For instance, the 3 book in Gabriel's Ghost series is well worth a read. And some of the Psy Changeling books as well.

And I love the idea of reading two books from a series in a month for our picks. I have been putting off reading the In Death series because I was fairly certain we would start that at some point!

Jute | 238 comments Since several people seem interested, do we want a separate group or someplace here? My only concern if we have the discussions in this space is whether there will be too many headers and this group will become a bit too unwieldy with the addition of the series topics. What do others think?

I don't feel like a separate group is necessary. We can have our own folder/heading (Like each book has it's separate folder) for each month. And then have subject lines in that folder for different series/books etc.

Cari (caressak1) | 10 comments I am also a series reader. If I can connect to the characters and story in a book, I really want more! Great idea, count me in.

Jillz are you a mod here? Between you and Vicki I'm fine to let you guys handle the forum thread creation.

message 16: by jillz (new)

jillz (jillzz) Nope, not a mod but if you need/want another one let me know.

message 17: by jillz (new)

jillz (jillzz) Are people still interested in a folder to discuss other books in series we have already read? I have continued reading on in most of the series we have started and would love to chat with anyone else who has done the same!

message 18: by Jute (new)

Jute | 238 comments I definitely am. I started a topic for the second book of the main pick series. Yeah that's a confusing sentence. :)

message 19: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I'm working through the Iron Duke seizes and loving it! Are we going to focus on one series at a time, or do threads for them all?

message 20: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Oh bother! I just looked up Naked in Death. I was just about to start that one! I'll have to get caught up on the Hangout's backlist instead.

I can't speak for everyone, but I'd love to have a place to discuss series books!

message 22: by jillz (new)

jillz (jillzz) The only series I have not continued reading were The Black Jewels books and I won't be reading the Weather Warden books either. Ill have a chat with Vicky so we can get a folder set up for the other books in series we have already read.

I'm worried about discussions here getting so micro-organized that the group is bloated, so I'd prefer to do this without making new folders if we can.

I don't necessarily see the reason to move series discussions into their own folders when they can be discussed in folder for the first book. That way everything related to that book/series is kept in one place. I think it may be a bit excessive to have a folder for the 1st book and a folder for the rest of the series. Not to mention, if someone comes a long and wants to talk about Ill Wind but finds the Weather Warden folder first - then we have Ill Wind discussions in more than one place and it gets crazy!

If you don't mind working with the previously established folders, I can sticky a thread (either this one or if someone wants to start a new one where they can save a few posts at the top for housekeeping) under the VF Picks: Discussion Index in the Book Discussion Folder where we can plan/discuss what series you're tackling next?

If you really think we'll need folders, we can figure something out - but that's my suggestion. :)
