Alex I discovered this wonderful new series a while back and immediately fell in love with it. The heroine's flaws were not a turn off, because the male protagonist made sure to compensate for them.

If you love books with strong heroines, hot, unconventional leading men, ghosts and magic, I recommend Stacia Kane's Downside series:

1. Unholy Ghosts
2. Unholy Magic
3. City of Ghosts
4. Sacrificial Magic
5. Chasing Magic

I apologize for not giving the links to these books, but I'm new at this and I haven't really gotten the hang of it yet.

If you've read the books, what do you think of them?

Jill I have read the first three just in the last few weeks. I absolutely loved them. I had no trouble with the drug use (alot of people seem to have had issues) and the slang I thought added another layer to the world. The world building was great and I thought it was quite a unique urban fantasy.
Terrible, well lets just say there aren't enough words to describe how much I love that man. He is honest and even though he is a thug (really he is) he has some integrity and he is your standard cocky hero. He is not overconfident about himself, he is a little shy. I just love him and to me I think he outshines Chess sometimes. Don't get me wrong I still like Chess and I like how her drug induced moods are written in the book, they can make her quite a different person.
I can't wait to read the next two books.

Alex At first, it bothered me that it wasn't written in the 1st person. But as soon as I met Terrible, I was lost...

I wanted to strangle Chess at times, because her addiction got into her way, but as you said, it's what makes this series and the character unique.

I finished the last book, Chasing magic, a week ago and let me tell you, you're gonna love it, especially when you get to the love scene...*sigh* *blush*

Jill Can't wait!! Glad theres someone else out there who loves this series.

Emy (emypt) | 59 comments I love Stacia Kane and this series. I've read the first three so far, plus the short story The Brave Tale of Maddie Carver and another short in Home Improvement: Undead Edition. I'm hoping to get both the next two novels this month or the next so I can devour them too...

Chess' addictions - without them she'd be too MarySue-ish for me, the failings make her real. I love the way that neither she nor Terrible are perfect, or even nice sometimes, but remain people you care about.

EDIT: GR Series link in case you want to see the shorts too.

Alex Terrible loves Chess in such a possessive way that I have to wonder, am I disturbed for liking how he treats her? Would you like to be loved in such a way? I gotta tell ya, Chess seemed almost afraid of Terrible sometimes.

message 7: by Jill (new)

Jill I thought she was scared when they had that fight( she had every reason to be, boy did she hurt and piss him off). Is she still afraid of him in the last two books? Is he over possesive because of her history with lex?

There are moments when she is afraid of him, but her biggest fear is of losing him because of her flaws and good intentions which turn out to have bad consequences. Yes, he's over possessive because of Lex. But please don't skip the books, he's just acting like the overprotective Alpha male that he is. Terrible isn't a baby's name, right? :))

Brianna | 76 comments THis series is amazing. Like Alex, I was put off by the fact that it's not written in the first-person, since that's my preference. However, I got totally drawn in, and now I don't even think about what POV the books are written in. They're so good. I love Terrible, and Chess, although the drug use does get a bit annoying, and I do wish she'd lessen up on it, and stop making such horrid decisions.

I've read all five of the novels, and the short story "Finding Magic", and they're all five stars for me. You can't get any better than that.

Alex Can the love scenes get any better? *siiigh*
My favorite love scene is the one from the last book, the one when he was way too jealous to be thinking clearly. :D

message 11: by Brianna (new)

Brianna | 76 comments lol yes. But then really, you can't blame him. I mean, he is with the chief maker of bad decisions that will bring doom to her relationship. :P

Only thing I wish would change, even slightly, is her self-hatred, and thinking that she doesn't deserve anything good. I mean, that was all well and good for the first few books, but....I dunno. We'll see, though. The ending for Chasing Magic has tons of promise for the future. :)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I liked this series and I had issues with the drug abuse not because it existed but because it was a poor description. I mean even high she was helpful come on that is false for a junkie and plus all the commentary about was a pain. In the second book SK toned it down which for me made the book more enjoyable.

At any rate I am really looking forward to Chasing Magic I really want to read more about Terrible, he is one of my favorite heroes.

Here are the links to all the books

Unholy Ghosts
Unholy Magic
City of Ghosts
Sacrificial Magic
Chasing Magic

Alex Hi, Dawn! Thanks for the links! I also figured out how to work this thing and add covers or links. It only took a day. *blush*

Chasing Magic is the best in the series for me. You'll remember the love scene for months to come. Uh, the other stuff in there was cool too. *grin*
