Samantha The Escapist Disclaimer: I have a lot of friends who read comic books and as a dutiful nerd I AM pretty interested in comic book culture (characters etc.) but I've never read a single super hero comic and I've not even seen any of the 4 batman movies in the 80s and 90s. But I know what Batman stands for in the universe (mostly because my friends and boyfriend won't shut up about it) and I find him a pretty compelling character.

Edilio is the Batman of the Gone universe. He is the member of the Gone justice league who doesn't have a super power.

(Astrid, though also unevolved, I'm exempting from this comparison as she was considered special before the anomaly)

Edilio has a unique stance of power in that he has built the empire of his power brick by brick, day by day. At any time he needs to he can deconstruct it piece by piece because each one was placed deliberately. Edilio will never be overwhelmed by his position in the community because he put himself there and knows exactly how it happened.

Ergo, Edilio won't go rogue, he doesn't have a kryptonite, he'll never forget his own limitations and this makes him the most powerful person there.

Batman has this same position in the DC universe (or almost even the superhero genre at large) because he is only human, he has money and toys but he makes his way by his own deliberation and nothing else.

Edilio and Batman were never handed a special ability to do anything.

(I just finished watching the Dark Knight finally in preparation of the third and I couldn't help drawing connections)

Emma You make a great point! That makes a lot of sense. I myself have never read a comic book in my life, but have seen the movies/know the story ect. and never thought about it that way. And just a thought, even though I think that Edilio is awesome and heroic and the glue of survival in the FAYZ, he plays the sidekick many a time. Usually I think of Edilio in more the sense of firemen/policemen/other human "super hero" all rolled into one.

Michael Very smart. I had fun with taking what seemed like a throwaway character, a poor kid from Honduras with no special abilities or superpowers and making him one of the most important people in the FAYZ. When Edilio first appeared I guarantee no one guessed where he was going. One of my few planned things was to show that it isn't always about the kid who can shoot light out of his hands, sometimes it's about the guy who is just honest, hardworking, modest and determined. A world of Edilio's would be q good place.

Wow! Awesome to get a response from you :P I`ve been a fan of your wife`s books since Everworld and Remnants and then while I was reading this I was strongly reminded of her style. What a pleasant surprise when I looked into it. Glad I picked up Gone despite the characters being almost a decade younger than myself...

As for Edilio I have to say he`s pretty much been my favourite character since he dug that first grave and I`ve never been given reason to shift his position on the list.

Genevieve Tilley Edilio and Lana are probably my two favorite characters. Well, little Pete, too ... I always get a Rose Red vibe from him. Good call on the Batman/Edilio comparison!

Michelle Ianiro I think Samantha and Michael pretty much said it all. =}

Edilio is pretty awsum in the buks

Ramiro hernandez never saw it that way but the comparison is there

Olivia Parsons This is an awesome observation. Edilio happens to be one of my favorite characters from the Gone series. c:

Well, in the terms of justice, Edilio's eldest brother is in the army (in afganistan or someting...) so he would have the kind, honourable and logical aspects of a soldier plus the awesomness of being honduran (mistken mexican...). I want to see if he'll get into trouble with drake or something. ^-^

Sophie Have you realised the Michael that read this is the MICHAEL GRANT that wrote the GONE series!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, yes. I was quite flattered actually.

Juliana I assumed Edilio was going to get somewhere in his FAYZ life because he stuck with Sam :)
