Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments an adoptive mom to a hamster.

I've been looking for a pet, but my crazy work schedule won't allow for a dog (which is my pet of choice) and I just feel guilty even with a cat....so why not try a nocturnal animal...that's when I will be home anyway.

I just filled out the paperwork to adopt rather than buy a hamster from a no kill rescue.....it's got me kind of excited and I had to share...

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I never knew you could adopt a hamster. I had sewveral. I suggest getting a small fish tank to put it in because it can't get out of it as easily. Hamsters don't live long about two years. They like bits of apple and carrots. When they get sick you can give them some plain vanilla yogurt on a plastic spoon and just have them lick it up. They also like those wheels but they can get addicted to them. Save the roll at the end of the toilet paper. They like to chew on it and it makes a nice little tunnel for them.

Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments Thanks Jayme....I was investigating about hamsters and looking on Petfinder....the Humane Society recommends adoption, but they are also on petfinder....

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I had about 30 hamsters and gerbils at one time. I know alot about them. You want to socialize him or her early. The way you do that is by petting them and working up to having them sit in your hand to the point where they groom themselves. Also, you might want to invest in some little plastic tunnels you can get at like Petco or something like that to get him or her something to do. You also want to get him or her a water dish, food bowl and bedding. You just layer the bottom of the tank. That needs to be cleaned out weekly. You only need to feed them every 2-3 days. They will hoard half the food. I hope this helps. Oh also, they are very nocturnal so expect to hear a wheel going at like 2 A.M.

Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments I <3 er... she has a great personality, loves her ball (will run around the house for hours if I let her). The wheel we have for her is quiet, but then again I am a heavy sleeper so I wouldn't hear her anyway (she has her own table in the living room).
