Locke | 8 comments Hello folks,

I'm interested in re-reading an old sci-fi book that I read back in the 80's, and naturally I can't remember the title or author. But I'm hoping someone out there can recognize the plot and help a guy out of his 'senior moment.'

The plot centered around a space race to develop interstellar travel. Earth had received a radio transmission from a nearby star - an alien race which had picked up our own radio waves and was saying 'hello.' The race was between a pair of large corporations, one trying to get faster-than-light travel to work, the other investing heavily in suspended animation. It all had a definite Dallas/Dynasty feel to it; rich families, corporate intrigue, and probably probably big hair - it was the 80's after all.

If any of that rings any bells, please let me know. Thanks!

~Locke

P. Aaron Potter (paaronpotter) | 585 comments I know, I feel awful since this sounds like it was right in my wheelhouse for the period. Can you remember any other details, Locke? A character name, anything?

Bob (g3bg35gb45) | 12 comments The closest thing I could find was "Between the Strokes of Night" by Charles Sheffield but it doesn't sound like it's quite the one your looking for.

Locke | 8 comments I knew it was a long shot :). I haven't been able to come up with a single google-able detail on this book since.. well, since I heard of Google. It was probably my first SF book, outside of Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica novelizations. Pretty sure it pre-dates Hitchhiker's.

It started off with the FTL ship being sabotaged in it's test flight. And in the end they do get it working, passing the frozen guys on the way to.. whatever star the ET's called home. Beyond that.. I may have to resort to hypnosis.

terpkristin | 4407 comments I will remind everybody, there's a GR group here called "What's the Name of that Book" which is really good and devoted to just such hunts. If S&L fails ya, would try there...

I'll try to remember to post a link when I'm not on my cell phone.

Mark Catalfano (cattfish) I think this one was featured on a recent Starshipsofa podcast, it sounds very familiar.

The one I was thinking of was Atom drive, by Charles Fontenay.

terpkristin | 4407 comments For anybody else that's interested, here's the link for the group I was talking about: What's The Name of That Book???

You have to join the group to post, but it's a pretty active community. Don't despair if they don't find your book right away, the community is active and new people join all the time. However, if they don't find it right away, it's best to bump your book search thread monthly.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like fun.
