It was English. Their teacher was about 70 and super strict. But when they walked in together, holding hands, she stopped to smile.

Dang. Beth had forgotten to do hers.
Beth's face was paper white. Ash leaned over.
"You okay?" he asked.
"No, I don't have a book report." Her eyes were filled with tears. The teacher came around to collect book reports. When she got to Beth, Beth looked up at her.
"Where's your book report?" she asked. Ash looked up.
"This is it," he said, handing her a paper, neatly typed and LONG. It was his own.
"I was just reading it," he said, "It's quite interesting."

"I got this." he said quietly.
"And where is your paper?" their English teacher asked.
"I forgot it."

Half credit? That was an F.
"Ash," Beth said after class, "You didn't have to do that." He forced a smile.
"It's alright Beth. Really, it is. Anything for you."
"It's alright Beth. Really, it is. Anything for you."
"Ash," she said, "Please go take credit for your book report. Explain it to the teacher. Please...for me?"

"What is it?" She scowled.
"I need to talk to you about my report. You see, Beth took the credit for mine. Actually, I forced her to take it, but no she wants me to tell you this."
The teacher peered over her old-woman glasses.
"She did WHAT?" She shook her head. "YOU did WHAT?" Ash cleared his throat.
"Yes...yes ma'am, she did. But only because she hasn't had the time to do hers. You see, her brother was in a terrible car accident, and...and..." he trailed off.

Beth walked in. Mrs. Smith peered over her glasses again.
"Elizabeth, we need to talk."
"Yes ma'am?"
"Ashlyn is telling me that you took credit for his project, but only because he told you to. Is this true? Hmmm?"
"Yes ma'am," Beth replied.
"Elizabeth, we need to talk."

"Ashlyn is telling me that you took credit for his project, but only because he told you to. Is this true? Hmmm?"
"Yes ma'am," Beth replied.

"Yeah," Beth replied quietly. She was starting to get worried about that 50 she'd get on her project. How would she tell her parents? They'd be furious!

Becca's face was sheet white. She pointed to herself.
"M-Me?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, you," the woman answered impatiently, "Now come with me!"
"M-Me?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, you," the woman answered impatiently, "Now come with me!"

He shoke his head.
Becca came back into the classroom, eyes cast downward, her face flushed a bright scarlet.
"Busted," she whispered.
"Busted," she whispered.

"I dunno. Vandalize the school? Beat up a lunch lady?" Beth guessed.
Ash smirked, "Or, she did something really stupid. Out of the ordinary, even for her." Beth seemed puzzled.
"And vandalizing the school or beating up a lunch lady AREN'T considered stupid or out of the ordinary?"
"And vandalizing the school or beating up a lunch lady AREN'T considered stupid or out of the ordinary?"

"We aren't that close." Beth said.
"Well, I'm not asking her."
"You do realize that this news will be all around school in like a day?" she said, just as Mrs. Walker yelled at them to pay attention.
"Sorry, Mrs. Walker." they said in unison.

Rumors circled the school. The most popular said that she tried to beat up the assistant principal.

There was silence on the other end, then, "I'm sure she's fine. Don't over think it."
God, even Ash seemed to think that she was losing it.
"I'm sure she got suspended or something," Ash continued, "I mean, it's Becca we're talking about."

"Hold on, let me check." Ash turned to his laptop and searched.
When she got in the room, she leaned over to Brody, who she sat beside, and whispered, "What happened to Becca?" He turned around, showing her his black eye.
"I broke up with her, and she punched me."
"Oh."
"I broke up with her, and she punched me."
"Oh."
