Wondered if any folks had used the Great Courses resources? http://www.thegreatcourses.co.uk/
http://www.thegreatcourses.com/
They look very interesting and in the UK have a sale on at present. I note a number of the lecturers are names I know from books I have read or seen.
I liked the one on Western Civ. that i borrowed from my library. They all seem very interesting but of late I have had no time to sit and listen.
The one on WWII was somewhat annoying. The author wasn't a very good speaker. The kind of Professor you would want to send to a speech class to get them to stop making vocalizations during their pauses.

I have completed several, most recently "Victorian Britain" by Patrick Allitt.

Thanks all - feedback from people here sets me up well. Next stop is which one of the many courses to choose.
So this is most definetly not a WWII topic. In fact it has more to do with the image I use for my persona. www.digifastproductions.com
That is the site that hosts my online comic. Please take a look and feel free to make any comments you like in regards to the comic. (I already know that the site needs some more work. LOL) By the by, I write it, someone else does the artwork.

I'm down on the East coast of Australia for a few days relaxing on the beach, walking, enjoying some nice cafes and reading so I may not be all that active on the group page. I'll be back in October but I will drop in and try and keep an eye on things each day.

Would be a long trip for you Manray9 but I am sure you would enjoy it, the breakers are calling me from the beach so I'm going to take my book and wander down to a beach cafe for a coffee, read and to enjoy the view.

Enjoy mate..is this another internal Australian economic trade delegation to review quality and stock in the book industry?
Quite correct Geevee, it's a secret industry review of the East coast retail book industry and the status of local sales :)
Took the wife shopping at a local village arts & crafts area, enjoyed a nice slice of carrot cake and a coffee and read for a while. Wind has really picked up so I think they are going to have problems with some bush fires further up the coast, north of Sydney. Haven't purchased any books yet.

Oh, what a live! I haven't been to a beach in years. I must be doing something wrong.Enjoy yourself, Rick!

I posted some pictures in the Photo Album from my last beach trip. I don't think I have tossed up any real pictures of the beach, since I was mostly taking pictures of WWII sites.

Where is this Photo Album?
Oh dear! Did I really write "... what a live!"? Shame on me. It should, of course, read "...what a life!" I am not kidding. This is not an excuse, but I developed some kind of dyslexia during the last 10 years. (Never had a trace of it before.) When I don't proofread my writing, I sometimes find the weirdest spellings. Now this is a mistake that is quite common, but I have done worse.
Oh, Lilo, your Mis-spellings could be that auto correct or whatever they call it. It is driving me nuts. I need to find out how to turn it off. Not ure how.

At the top of the page on the right hand side where it says the different places in the group you can go to, one of the options is photos. That is where I put the pictures. At the moment it is mostly Fort Stevens. I have a few more of the Blimp Hanger/Air Museum in Tillamook that I haven't posted. The shame of those pictures is that in a year and a half or so it won't be a museum any longer.
Thank you, Dj. This wasn't too difficult to find. Will look at the pix tomorrow. It is 5.05 a.m. now. Ain't I a night owl?
Laurel, if you are still interested in going on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the govt shutdown will allow traffic on the parkway, but the attractions and accommodations that are run by the park service will be closed. :-( This is the time when they make most if their money. Such a shame.
Tionne wrote: "Laurel, if you are still interested in going on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the govt shutdown will allow traffic on the parkway, but the attractions and accommodations that are run by the park service ..."Thank you for thinking of me! Our trip along the Parkway will be next year or beyond. We are planning on visiting Williamsburg in Dec., then on to Florida. That will be it for 2013.
Also want to thank you for your friend request, I'm sure that we will have lots to talk about.

Please, everybody, go to "AIR, LAND, & SEA ... Holocaust" discussion thread and read my last posts.I am really upset.
This is a website rec, but since it is not strictly about WW II, I posted it here. It may be a little American-centric for our international group, but there are interesting links to articles, a few book reviews, and some maps. It is updated daily. Check it out.http://www.realclearhistory.com

Today's NY Times contained the following review of Max Hastings' "Catastrophe 1914" by Hew Strachan. It reads as if Hastings' book may be of interest to members of our group -- even though it's WW I. When Strachan writes "Tuchman is supplanted," he got my attention.http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/18/boo...

A high bar to reach - Sir Max is a very good author and Ms Tuchman's book
was a fine piece of work.I would also recommend
by David Stevenson
I've read Max Hastings' Catastrophe 1914 and it was a great read! Thanks for posting the link to the NYT review Manray9.

As far as Tuchman goes, Guns left me a little flat. However I really loved:
and have dipped into
The Stilwell book is interesting enough that I know that one day I will finish it. LOL

He does give Tuchman some praise in the the forward.
Part way through the Hastings book. Up to the retreat from Mons. So far so excellent. I think this will probably be brst of the plethora of WWI books being published this year. Highly recommended. Ian

All good were I am so far Manray9, the bushfires are further north although the city is covered in a smoke haze. As long as we don't suffer another day like this one:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_Can...
