Geevee | 3812 comments Wondered if any folks had used the Great Courses resources?

http://www.thegreatcourses.co.uk/
http://www.thegreatcourses.com/

They look very interesting and in the UK have a sale on at present. I note a number of the lecturers are names I know from books I have read or seen.

message 203: by Tionne (new)

Tionne | 255 comments I liked the one on Western Civ. that i borrowed from my library. They all seem very interesting but of late I have had no time to sit and listen.

message 204: by Dj (new)

Dj | 2295 comments The one on WWII was somewhat annoying. The author wasn't a very good speaker. The kind of Professor you would want to send to a speech class to get them to stop making vocalizations during their pauses.

message 205: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3812 comments Thanks Tionne and Dj - I wouldn't be choosing WWII so that may be a blessing!

I have completed several, most recently "Victorian Britain" by Patrick Allitt.

Dj | 2295 comments The one on Greek Myths was wonderful. Very well done.

Geevee | 3812 comments Thanks all - feedback from people here sets me up well. Next stop is which one of the many courses to choose.

message 209: by Dj (new)

Dj | 2295 comments So this is most definetly not a WWII topic. In fact it has more to do with the image I use for my persona.

www.digifastproductions.com

That is the site that hosts my online comic. Please take a look and feel free to make any comments you like in regards to the comic. (I already know that the site needs some more work. LOL) By the by, I write it, someone else does the artwork.

It seems like all the new developements are getting them in Utah. They have put in several in the county where I live.

Maybe Utah has too much money. :-)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 20091 comments I'm down on the East coast of Australia for a few days relaxing on the beach, walking, enjoying some nice cafes and reading so I may not be all that active on the group page. I'll be back in October but I will drop in and try and keep an eye on things each day.

Sounds like fun. Wish I was there.

message 215: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 20091 comments Would be a long trip for you Manray9 but I am sure you would enjoy it, the breakers are calling me from the beach so I'm going to take my book and wander down to a beach cafe for a coffee, read and to enjoy the view.

message 216: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3812 comments Enjoy mate..is this another internal Australian economic trade delegation to review quality and stock in the book industry?

message 217: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 20091 comments Quite correct Geevee, it's a secret industry review of the East coast retail book industry and the status of local sales :)

message 218: by Mike, Assisting Moderator US Forces (new)

Mike | 3645 comments Enjoy yourself Rick. Just spent a month on the left coast here and enjoyed the beach time.

message 219: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 20091 comments Took the wife shopping at a local village arts & crafts area, enjoyed a nice slice of carrot cake and a coffee and read for a while. Wind has really picked up so I think they are going to have problems with some bush fires further up the coast, north of Sydney. Haven't purchased any books yet.

I posted some pictures in the Photo Album from my last beach trip. I don't think I have tossed up any real pictures of the beach, since I was mostly taking pictures of WWII sites.

Where is this Photo Album?

message 225: by Lilo (new)

Lilo (liloh-p) | 586 comments Oh dear! Did I really write "... what a live!"? Shame on me. It should, of course, read "...what a life!"

I am not kidding. This is not an excuse, but I developed some kind of dyslexia during the last 10 years. (Never had a trace of it before.) When I don't proofread my writing, I sometimes find the weirdest spellings. Now this is a mistake that is quite common, but I have done worse.

message 226: by Bob (new)

Bob Weber | 104 comments Oh, Lilo, your Mis-spellings could be that auto correct or whatever they call it. It is driving me nuts. I need to find out how to turn it off. Not ure how.

At the top of the page on the right hand side where it says the different places in the group you can go to, one of the options is photos. That is where I put the pictures. At the moment it is mostly Fort Stevens. I have a few more of the Blimp Hanger/Air Museum in Tillamook that I haven't posted. The shame of those pictures is that in a year and a half or so it won't be a museum any longer.

message 228: by Lilo (new)

Lilo (liloh-p) | 586 comments Thank you, Dj. This wasn't too difficult to find. Will look at the pix tomorrow. It is 5.05 a.m. now. Ain't I a night owl?

message 229: by Tionne (new)

Tionne | 255 comments Laurel, if you are still interested in going on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the govt shutdown will allow traffic on the parkway, but the attractions and accommodations that are run by the park service will be closed. :-( This is the time when they make most if their money. Such a shame.

Thank you for thinking of me! Our trip along the Parkway will be next year or beyond. We are planning on visiting Williamsburg in Dec., then on to Florida. That will be it for 2013.

Also want to thank you for your friend request, I'm sure that we will have lots to talk about.

I am really upset.

Manray9 | 4800 comments This is a website rec, but since it is not strictly about WW II, I posted it here. It may be a little American-centric for our international group, but there are interesting links to articles, a few book reviews, and some maps. It is updated daily. Check it out.

message 241: by Manray9 (new)

Manray9 | 4800 comments Today's NY Times contained the following review of Max Hastings' "Catastrophe 1914" by Hew Strachan. It reads as if Hastings' book may be of interest to members of our group -- even though it's WW I. When Strachan writes "Tuchman is supplanted," he got my attention.

message 242: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3812 comments A high bar to reach - Sir Max is a very good author and Ms Tuchman's book The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman was a fine piece of work.

I would also recommend 1914-1918 (Allen Lane History) by David Stevenson by David Stevenson

message 243: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 20091 comments I've read Max Hastings' Catastrophe 1914 and it was a great read! Thanks for posting the link to the NYT review Manray9.

Having just finished The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman , Keegan's book will go on the TBR. Tuchman deserved the high praise, will be interested to compare with Keegan.

message 245: by Dj (new)

Dj | 2295 comments As far as Tuchman goes, Guns left me a little flat.
However I really loved:

The March of Folly From Troy to Vietnam by Barbara W. Tuchman

and have dipped into

Stilwell and the American Experience in China 1911-45 by Barbara W. Tuchman

The Stilwell book is interesting enough that I know that one day I will finish it. LOL

I'm currently reading Catastrophe 1914 - so far it is up to Sir Max's high standards. He does give Tuchman some praise in the the forward.

Ian | 86 comments Part way through the Hastings book. Up to the retreat from Mons. So far so excellent. I think this will probably be brst of the plethora of WWI books being published this year. Highly recommended. Ian

Prof Strachan is the best, and I worked for him at Glasgow before he went to Oxford. Good man.
