FYI to all, Anne and I just finished The German Aces Speak Vol. 2. For those who read vol. 1, you will want this one when Zenith Press releases it in november. Has the interviews with Erich Hartmann, Johannes Steinhoff, Dietrich Hrabak and Gunther Rall. Some really tragic yet also funny stories from the guys.
Just back from a visit to the Citadel in Budapest, dropped in and checked out the WW2 museum there and took some photographs which I will try and add to the group page once I get back home.Further information on the Citadel:

RE: The video on the WW2 group home page:The last film from the Oder front 1945
Haunting video, the youthfulness, the street sign: 63KM to Berlin and especially w/that music.
German technology: note at 45 secs one soldier takes
out an early iphone, then at 48 secs, another soldier
answers the call. Advanced, yet once again, too
little, too late.
Hopefully I am going to get a chance to visit Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc today, will be my first time seeing this area.
'Aussie Rick' wrote: "Hopefully I am going to get a chance to visit Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc today, will be my first time seeing this area."I can imagine it will be a moving experience.
I'm sure it will Mike, I've read so much about the landings but to actually see and walk the area wil be sure to be quite emotional.
'Aussie Rick' wrote: "I'm sure it will Mike, I've read so much about the landings but to actually see and walk the area wil be sure to be quite emotional."Never been there. I envy you the experience. Please offer a moment of silence on my behalf.
Visited the new Overlord Museum, the American Cemetery and Omaha Beach along with Pointe du Hoc. All amazing and very touching, good to see that there were people from all over the world visiting these sites.
I hope to visit this site tomorrow if my wife lets me:http://www.normandiememoire.com/fiche...

'Aussie Rick' wrote: "Hopefully I am going to get a chance to visit Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc today, will be my first time seeing this area."Rick, go by the Akllied cemetery, very impressive, and you will notice that there are no French graves. That speaks volumes.
Only if my wife lets me Colin but I will try, so much to see here but so little time, I only have three days in Caen.
AR, I also liked the German cemetery - stop by only if the wife will let you of course :)It's on the way to St. Mere Eglise (SP)

Why don't you leave your wife with a good book and a good bottle of wine at the hotel and visit these sites alone? On the other hand, I can relate to your wife. She probably wants to do other things aside of visiting historic sites. Marriage requires compromise. What's your wife's idea of an ideal vacation?
Totally agree about a marriage being a compromise between two people, my wife's idea of a good holiday is staying at home and enjoying her house, garden & pets :)
Then you are all set. No more problems. Six months in the year you stay at home, and six months in the year you go and visit historic sites. :-)
@ everybody: I wonder if any of you would do me a favor and help an author Goodreads friend of mine with his book launch. The author is Jim Snowden. (He is a history doctoral candidate.) The title of the book is "Summer of Long Knives."
In order to promote his book-launch (scheduled for Aug 31), Jim has started a Goodreads group, titled "Jim Snowden Q&A group for Summer of Long Knives".
This group, so far, has 9 members (including the author), and 7 of these members seem to be lying in coma. Thus, all the discussions of the group are a dialogue between me and Jim. This is getting a bit awkward.
I wonder if any of you would do me the favor to join this group, receive a free ARC, and participate in the group discussions.
"Der Dank des Vaterlandes sei Euch gewiss."* ("Be assured of the gratitude of the fatherland.") :-)
* This is a slogan that arose after WWI, and is now used in a humorous way.
Hi Lilo, happy to go over and join in, you could also invite Jim over here to discuss & promote his book in the authors area if you like?
I forgot to mention: Jim Snowden has done extensive historical research to write this novel. It is a murder mystery, set in Hitler's Germany.
Thank you so much, Rick.Would Jim be allowed into the author area of our group, even though his novel ends BEFORE WWII breaks out?

Sure, it has relevance to the war, please invite him along to tell us about his book, I am sure a few members will be interested.
Thank you so much, again, Rick.I just sent Jim a message and informed him of your generous offer.
You might not hear from me for a while. Either my computer or the Goodreads website are going crazy. I cannot access my Notifications (have to go search on my own where I expect comments), and my computer jumps from one Goodreads page to the other, like intoxicated. (Maybe one of the Goodreads programmers found into your wine cellar.)
Sounds like a great adventure AR, take notes! 'Aussie Rick' wrote: "Only if my wife lets me Colin but I will try, so much to see here but so little time, I only have three days in Caen."
It's an amazing feeling driving around the Normandy area seeing sign posts to so many places that I have read about in regards to the fighting in 1944, places like; Carpiquet, Villers Bocage ( hope to visit there on Thursday), Falaise, Sainte Mere-Eglise, Carentan, St-Lo, and many more. You would need a few weeks here to explore fully but I have really appreciated the chance to see some of these sights and get a feel for the ground that the Allied and German soldiers fought over so desperately so many years back. I think I will have to arrange another visit with a mate and do it all again but with more time.

'Aussie Rick' wrote: "I'm loading up heaps on Facebook, not very good at it but I'm learning :)"Thanks. I'll track down your FB page.
How can I find you on Facebook? Please explain idiot-proof. I have even trouble finding my own page on Facebook.I LOVE pictures.
Oh yeah AR, as long as you are in Normandy, you coulduse some Calvados for your cellar, running a bit low
and as long as you're there, you might as well
get the good stuff.

Oh Lilo, I thought I joined Jim's group. My grand daughter helped me, but I do not know how to check & see if I am in or not. It is hard to be fairly computer illiterate. I do try & do better than many people my ge, but that isn't saying much. I know lots who can't even turn a computer on.
I just checked Jim's group. You are NOT on there. Something must have gone wrong.I am not much better than you with computers and social media. It took me 3-4 months to find my way around Goodreads, and I am far from being sufficiently familiar with it.
Ok Lilo, the website said that you need to be invited to join,so I clicked that button & am hoping Jim will invite me???
Trinette wrote: "Ok Lilo, the website said that you need to be invited to join,so I clicked that button & am hoping Jim will invite me???"I am sure Jim will invite you. But he seems to be away from his computer, today. Hope, he'll be back, tomorrow.

Hi Lilo, I'm not sure if this will work but here is a link to my Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/rick.mcqualt...
Thank you for the link, Rick. It DID work. Thank you also for sharing these interesting pictures. I suggest you take your wife for a fancy, romantic dinner. As interesting and stirring these historic places are, they don't convey much vacation spirit. Neither do the baguette, ham, cheese, and tomato dinners. I must say, however, that when I traveled France (on two occasions) we also lived on baguettes and cheese as we didn't like raw meat, and that's what we got in every restaurant, no matter how often we said "tres bien roti". We regretted not to have taken our (then only) cat along. She would have liked raw steaks.
We are off to Mont St. Michel tomorrow and I am sure we will enjoy a very nice romantic dinner and if not there we have five days in Paris after that :)http://www.ot-montsaintmichel.com/ind...
Oh Rick, I have been lucky enough to visit Paris, but how I would love to see Mont St Michel. It looks so fascinating in pictures. I hope you know how lucky you are!
I know I'm pretty lucky, my wife has let me check out a few WWI and WWII sites during 'our' holidays and I'm really looking forward to Mont St. Michel. Will let you know how we go :)
