Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Go for it. Anything he's recommended, any genre.

One nomination per person, use the add book/author function to link to the title. No need to second, everything eligible will be in the poll.

Nominations close July 18th, then we'll vote.

King recommended that? Wow....I thought he had more respect for classic literature.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Hmm... Right. Please include references for nominations - where it was mentioned that King recommended your book. :)

Courtney | 293 comments As we all know, Matheson was a huge influence on King's writing. So I would like to nominate The Shrinking Man The Shrinking Man by Richard Matheson

(recommended in Danse Macabre)

In 11/22/63, King calls this the best time travel book ever.

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Shardik Shardik by Richard Adams . Dunno where it says he's actually recommended it but it was mentioned in The Waste Lands.

King's recommendation is on the front of the book.

Jason Baldwin-Stephens | 126 comments I didn't realize it until after I read it but at some point (maybe in his Entertainment Weekly column) King recommended Savages. I picked the book up on a whim the other week and was glad I did.

The writing style is in line with Cormac McCarthy or James Ellroy, though a little more contemporary than either.

I thought you had said in the past that King did not necessarily have to recommend, it could also be a book we would recommend to King ourselves?

message 13: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine | 312 comments My bad, can't find if he had recommended.

message 14: by Brent (new)

Brent McGuffin (themcguffin) | 58 comments I'm going to recommend Heart-Shaped BoxI mean, you know Uncle Stevie wants us to read Cousin Joe's book!!

message 15: by Trudi (new)

Trudi (trudistafford) I'd like to nominate Sharp Objects. Here's the link to his recommendation: http://gillian-flynn.com/sharp-objects/

message 16: by Bondama (new)

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments As a matter of fact, Marc-Antoine, King most DEFINITELY hasn't ever recommended "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" --
As Chris so expertly pointed out, Stephen King has an enormous respect for classical literature - that, and to simply take a classic and add a "supernatural element" isn't really writing. It just will never be original - without the backbone of Jane Austen's wonderful book, this would simply be a book about zombies in Regency England.

I'll nominate Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan.

I was looking through the recent GR giveaways the other day and saw one for the sequel. http://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sho...

You'll see the reference for the King recommendation right there on the description.

"From the national bestselling author of Bad Things Happen—the debut that Stephen King called a “great f***ing book”"

No, we alternate themes... that's a different month. This month is what he's recommended. You can certainly wait until October and nominate what you'd recommend to King though - that's the next time it'll switch. (September will be a King book.)

To each their own Bondama, IMO Seth Grahame-Smith is a very original and great writer.

Original and great (and rich, say true) is now defined by taking someone else's work and adding zombies? Cool.

I'm going to rewrite The Time Machine and add pole dancers.

message 21: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine | 312 comments He has come with a new genre, who many have tried to copy, but no one has come close to his success. Although I have yet to read P,P and Z, I have read Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and was thoroughly entertained and greatly enjoyed the novel. The movie was also loads of fun. I am currently reading Unholy Night by the same author and also find it highly entertained. Now if for some reason, you son't want to give this author a shot because of some preconceived notion that he is messing around with some values you have decided you needed to set in literature, that's fine, don't read it, but if you have not even given him a try before attacking his work...well, I don't think I need to go on.

Eh...it's kind of off the subject. Truth is, I didn't attack the author or his work. I'm of the opinion that taking somebody's published novel (P&P), inserting stuff into it, and selling it for a profit is wrong. It's legal, due to our strange copyright laws that don't protect a work after so many years. But I still don't think it's right.

At any rate, my real point here was that I didn't think King had recommended it. For the same concerns I've just stated.
