I really liked them. Mitch Albom is a really thought provoking writer that makes you think of the spiritual aspects of life. They are also quick reads.

I am now reading his latest book The First Phone Call from Heaven The First Phone Call from Heaven by Mitch Albom

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) | 598 comments Hi Anita
I just finished French Silk.I really liked it,just wished there was a little more of Cassidy and Clairs story at the end,in fact all the way thru would have been good.
There wasn`t much action between them except for accusing each other of being guilty-but then Sandra always leaves us guessing.

How was the story Jane. I just read A Proposal for Christmas: State Secrets\The Five Days of Christmas A Proposal for Christmas State Secrets\The Five Days of Christmas by Linda Lael Miller

I was really disappointed in the story. I understand and accept Christmas storys are going to be sappy, but this one felt just like it came out of the 50s. (The setting was today) The heroine, Holly Llewellyn, was suppose to be in her late 20s, early 30s, from Spokane, Wa. She was constantly worried about her reputation if she spent the night with the hero, David Goddard. Unless there is a backstory to it, I don't see a modern woman really worried about what people think.

I don't really read much of Linda Lael Miller's books and I was wondering if this is characteristic in her writing.

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 7583 comments I have a hummingbird that has built her nest in an orange tree in my backyard. It is a little about my eye level, I know she has at least one egg about the size of a bean. What is cool is we can see her nest from the kitchen window. It is so hard not to go out there and want to look in her nest, and take a bunch of pictures etc.

Anyway I went out and got a bunch of books about hummingbirds. Among the hoard of books I gotAmazing but True Bird Tales Amazing but True Bird Tales (Amazing But True) by Mara Bovsun

It's a fun book. The first story talks about a flock of mallards sitting in a pond when a cat jumps on the back of one of the mallards. Well naturally, the bird is terrified and manages to take to the air, with the cat on her back. When the cat goes airborne, naturally she is frightened, so she hangs on for dear life. The bird crashes into the lake, and the cat runs away. The mallards then safely takes off, never to be seen again.

I wonder if the cat ever tries to jump on a birds back again?

Janeiowa | 5009 comments Dee...I think that's an older book that maybe Linda or someone tried to update. I saw it listed on a site with her books as 1986 pub. date. I hate when publishers re-issue stuff and make something 28 yrs old look new.

I liked her McKettrick men and Creed series books very much. You might want to try one of those, if you like contemporary westerns. These are 2007 so also a bit dated.

McKettrick's Pride (McKettrick Men, #2) (McKettricks, #7) by Linda Lael Miller

McKettrick's Heart (McKettrick Men, #3) (McKettricks, #8) by Linda Lael Miller

Carly Carson | 60 comments Dee, I've read only 1 book by Miller, but I had the exact same impression. It may be that the one I read (a new hardback) was also a re-issue, but it put me off her. As for the bird, I have this tale. I'm reading a book called Are Dolphins Really Smart?: The mammal behind the myth. It starts out by telling us how smart chickens are! Seriously.

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 7583 comments Ahhh that answers the question. Still I thought the sexual revolution had already happened in 86. I mean I can imagine a young woman 18 or 19 worried, but a grown woman?

Carly, it is amazing how smart birds are. At a Lowes, swallows had made nests inside the stores warehouse. Since the back door would open/close by motion detector the birds figured out that if they !!!circled in a tight ball near the sensor it would open/close. when One Asst manager locked the door early the birds pecked him till he open the door. I love this type of book!!!!

message 475: by Janeiowa (new)

Janeiowa | 5009 comments I think the revolution had happened, as I recall from the 1980s. I think, however, there are some women who still are too concerned about what someone else thinks, even in 2014.

I also wonder if authors have earlier "manuscripts/works-in-progress” that they dig out and rework once they've become published. I also know that there are some books that just don't meet the earlier standard of books I enjoyed. I guess all authors suffer from that.

As I said, I own and have enjoyed a large no. of Miller's books, but this last series "the Parable, Montana" ones didn't grab me as the Creed and McKettrick ones did. Others, I'm sure, feel differently.

I had the same experience with SEP. I love some of her works, but the last two were meh for me.

message 476: by Dee (last edited Jan 07, 2014 09:30PM) (new)

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 7583 comments I am going to look for the McKettrick and Creed series. Although those names sound real familiar, of course, those names are very common. I can think of at least three authors that have used those surnames.

I agree with you with SEP, I was kind of ok with Great Escape, definitely not my favorite though, but the last one (can't recall the name) I really didn't like.

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 7583 comments Jane that is like the Amazing but true bird Tales. That one did have a link. I can't quit reading these stories, and I want to find as many of this type of book that I can.

A lost cockatiel drove its foster parents crazy by whistling Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture at 4 AM every morning. Or a Mynah bird let on to a woman that her husband was having an affair, by repeating words that the husband told his girlfriend. Words like "divorce," or "be patient" or "I love you."

I am going to look for that book. I dearly love these types of books.

I love how animals, even the ones you think are really dumb, show amazing intelligence. I think that we want to put a label on these animals because of our conceit.

Speaking of animals going to humans for help, a mother duck died and left her 9 ducklings in a pond. One left the others walked down the bank crossed the street and pecked on the door of the RSPCA (animal welfare group) and got someone to follow it back. The duck, called Superduck, saved his brothers and sisters because they would have died from hypothermia.

When a goose needed help she went up to a policeman and tugged on his pants leg. Then it started walking back squawking. the policeman didn't know what she wanted so started on his way. The goose again pulled on his pants leg and did the same thing. The cop finally followed and found her babies had fallen down a storm drain. They were able to get the chicks out. The book said usually geese will peck and fight to keep you away from her young. She just stood back and waited. When he and others got them out the goose and her young went on their way.

Kathy Anne (kathyanne) | 598 comments I read a book once that a Tiger New Mother had cubs where they were going to drown from the Monsoons,so she swam to the guy who raised her and got his attention then she went over to the small boat they had crossed the river in as she was growing up and got in and sat down and waited for him.
After they got there she got the babies, put hem in the boat and brought them to safety

Yeah it is true ,a TV show actually,I was quite young and was mistaking it for a book.
It was one of the TV nature shows about the guy raising her and when she left him she didn`t go far.I think the babies were quite close to the camp.

There have been stories about dolphins saving humans almost as far back as recorded history goes. They also come to humans for help, like when they have a fish hook in their mouths. No one really knows how intelligent they are.

Janeiowa | 5009 comments Is anyone here an Elizabeth Lowell fan? I've not purchased any of her books, but I got an ad this morning in email for her series on the Rocking M ranch. I'm a great fanof Linda Howard, Rachel Gibson, Ann Vaughn, Toni Blake, Emma Cane, RaeAnne Thayne. Does Lowell fit with these authors?

Thanks. (I did post before as Jane, until I found out GR allows multiple users with the same name! I am surprised and I was unhappy about being thought to post elsewhere when it wasn't me, so I'm using Janeiowa now.)

I'm reading Emma Cane's newest, THE COWBOY OF VALENTINE VALLEY. This one is about Josh Thalberg.

Love this book since I got it about 10 yrs ago I must have read it 5 or 6 times.
It`s a warmly written Romantic Suspanse but shes never big in the Romance Dept. But it is definitely romantic sexual suspense.I see many ask for books written about 40 yr old age group and this fills that bill really well.
