I started Mistborn, but put it down...for no good reason, really. It is a very interesting story, and I plan to go back to it...I just don't think it fit my mood at the time.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments This short is just ot that interesting. I want to put it down but I agreed to review it. So...

You know how it is when you HAVE to do something rather than WANT to do something...

Moving right along...

message 216: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments So, I finished Night Heat (Steele Series, #2) by Brenda Jackson Night Heat last night, and briefly started Changeless (Parasol Protectorate, #2) by Gail Carriger Changeless; Book 2 in The Parasol Protectorate Boxed Set Soulless, Changeless, Blameless, Heartless and Timeless by Gail Carriger The Parasol Protectorate Boxed Set: Soulless, Changeless, Blameless, Heartless and Timeless.
I'm starting to like Alexia more, after the first chapter, than I did in the last book. I have a feeling her new lot in life will suit her very well! I hope I can put in some quality reading time tomorrow after work.

message 217: by Spacechik (last edited Nov 26, 2013 04:48PM) (new)

Spacechik | 83 comments I've started the third book in the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka. I have to say I'm not impressed. Why? I don't care about any of the characters. I don't get it. The author isn't a bad author. Maybe Jim Butcher has ruined me for all other wizardly types. That can't be true. I like Kevin Hearn's Iron Druid series. Too bad. I really wanted to like Jacka's books. The characters seem shallow to me. Neither Mage Verus nor his female interest is very well developed in my opinion, even as far in as the third book. I refuse to put it down though, so I must like something about it. But, then I have muddled through worse books.

That sounds absolutely frustrating! You're probably liking the overall story even though you're not that crazy about the specific characters - I've had that happen before.

I hope it improves for you, or that you can get to a point where you can put it down "freely".

That must be it. I like the story but not the characters. I'll keep at it, of course. I'm just passing time anyway until JB's 14th book...thanks for the encouragement, Nyssa.

Glad to be of help! :)

I can't wait for the next Dresden Files either. Skin Games will be #15 ;)

message 221: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments I've been thinking about checking out Jacka, after I get through all my other series, or at least knock a couple more into the "caught up and waiting" zone.

I gave up on Iron Druid Chronicles.

Hmm..That's been on my "Wish List" for a while now.... along with about 100 other series.

message 223: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Well, I can't say why without spoilers, so I'll just say that he made decisions that made the series less interesting for me.

message 225: by Christa, The Renewed (new)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments Well, not exactly, but there is some predictability going on too.

Hard to explain without bringing up specific plot stuff. But I will say that the first four books were really good, especially the first three. And I don't feel like I'm "missing out" by stopping after #5.

Agreed. I liked the first 4 and then it got strange. IT's like Hearne lost his train of thought kinda. I read them all though.

message 228: by Nyssa, Series Addict (last edited Nov 27, 2013 07:51PM) (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments I've been told to interrupt my regularly scheduled book to read Origin by Jessica Khoury Origin.

My daughter just finished this minutes ago and informed me that it is my turn. Daddy read it a couple of days ago, in one sitting, so that she would have someone with whom to discuss the book, but she wants me in on it as well.

How can I possibly say no. :)

message 229: by HomeInMyShoes (new)

HomeInMyShoes | 2759 comments You can't, but that's not really a bad problem to have. :)

Christa (christaw) | 1457 comments MrsJoseph (taking back my data & giving GR the middle finger) wrote: "Oh no! I read book 1 and loved it. I think I have 2..."

That's fine, the first three are the best and definitely worth a read. Like I said, I didn't feel like I left anything undone by stopping when I did. He set up the first three sort of as a trilogy anyway.

message 233: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Cool. :)

message 234: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

Nyssa | 1569 comments So... Origin by Jessica Khoury Origin never quite got off the ground. I just couldn't get into it.

Since then I've read Elfbitten (Taryn Malloy Fantasy, #1) by Leila Bryce Sin Elfbitten and Elfstruck by Leila Bryce Sin Elfstruck, two highly erotic and very short stories, of acceptable quality, by Leila Bryce Sin.

Plus, I will be finishing School of Fear (School of Fear, #1) by Gitty Daneshvari School of Fear by Gitty Daneshvari, tonight.

message 235: by Nyssa, Series Addict (new)

I just finished reading Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews Clean Sweep by Ilona Andrews and I absolutely loved it!!

Finishing the story was a pleasant way to spend a couple hours of my Christmas evening.

While I hate to have to wait for a series...this is a series I'm willing to wait for.

*Fingers Crossed* for both of us! :) I'm really hoping that the Series challenge over at FoF helps! I keep finding more series that I want to start/finish.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Yeah, me too! But I'm starting to admit that I suck at assigned readings and only can manage so many. I'm going to try to be nice to myself this year...

True. There seems to be an odd pressure that we, or at least I, put on myself when I make a list of books to read - even when they're books I know I want to read. Then I lose interest as soon as I tell myself "You have to read "X". On the other hand, I also find myself being overwhelmed by the sheer number of books I have at my disposal {talk about first world problems}, so I'm trying to walk a thin line. I'm giving myself a smaller selection pool, but leaving it wide open as to reading order.
Thats one of the things I like about the series challenge - Its based on what you read, not specifically on how many, or which ones you read. If that makes sense.

And..its not going to happen. It does actually seem like an interesting tale; I enjoyed the 3 or four chapters that I read and I've placed it back on my TBR list. I just can't manage to give it the attention it deserves.
