Steelwhisper | 140 comments I'm looking for "old-fashioned" stories written by modern writers. One species per novel (e.g. only vampires, or only werewolves) according to the old myths rather than their modern tropes.

Any suggestions?

Steelwhisper | 140 comments So are there really no new ones out there which feature just one species of paranormal creatures? I don't even dare ask in old-fashioned way...

Lisa (lisamessegee) | 120 comments You might be interested in Lori Handeland's Nightcreature series. It's werewolves only, and they're the bad guys. It starts with:
Blue Moon (Nightcreature, #1) by Lori Handeland
Vampires only, though not traditional vampires:
Midnight Breed by Lara Adrian
Kiss of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #1) by Lara Adrian
More traditional vampires:
Carpathians by Christine Feehan
Dark Prince (Dark, #1) by Christine Feehan
Wolf shifters:
Changeling by Dani Harper
Changeling Moon (Changeling, #1) by Dani Harper
Vampires:
Sweetblood by Laurie London
Bonded by Blood (Sweetblood, #1) by Laurie London
Urban vampires:
Black Dagger Brotherhood by J R Ward
Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward
Vampires:
Mark of the Vampire by Laura Wright
Eternal Hunger (Mark of the Vampire #1) by Laura Wright
Hope this helps!

Steelwhisper | 140 comments Heh! Thank you! That spares me wading through a lot of books I wasn't looking for, really appreciated.

Steelwhisper | 140 comments Heh, bought If Angels Burn (Darkyn, #1) by Lynn Viehl and enjoying it so far quite a bit!

Shay (shaylyn318) I really like Linda Lael Miller's vampire series. It is an older series from the 90's but it was what got me into vampire romance years ago. My favorite is Time Without End. The vampires do have magical abilities and can time travel.

Forever and the Night (Vampire, #1) by Linda Lael Miller For All Eternity (Vampire, #2) by Linda Lael Miller Time Without End (Vampire, #3) by Linda Lael Miller Tonight And Always (Vampire, #4) by Linda Lael Miller

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) I'll ask a friend of mine. She's read a lot of books. Off the top of my head, I can't really think of a shifter book that stuck with just shifters. Even Patricia Briggs' Alpha and Omega series has vamps (although they are mostly background, especially compared to the weres.)

Will ponder more and look through my list.

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) | 839 comments I have some YA recommendations which I don't think you are looking for.

Umm, I just read, Redemption by Susannah Sandlin which was really good (vamp book).

I know I should have more ideas but I am drawing a blank.

If you are looking for some great YA ones though, The Mayfair Moon and Hemlock are both awesome ones for werewolves.

Steelwhisper | 140 comments I was looking more for books aimed at an adult audience and I was hooked on Stoker and Shelley as a youth and in a way they are the gold standard still.

Several species outside of SF/fantasy (I like them there fine, just not in horror or UB) feels like a zoo to me and stretches my ability for suspension of disbelief too far.

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 451 comments Chelsea Quinn Yarbro wrote a series about a traditional vampire which covers a long span of time and many cultures, The Saint Germaine Chronicles. They're a mix of horror, history, and romance, but I always found them shelved under horror. Saint Germane is an interesting character and is never static. Hotel Transylvania (Saint-Germain, #1) by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro
