Jenelle Wow! I have only made it thru the first book.... but you are right!

message 2: by Ian (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ian So true. It was the reason I stopped reading the Inheritance series at the end of the second book. SPOILERS: At the end, when the other dragon rider dramatically reveals himself to be his brother (a la 'I am your father'), I had enough of the Star Wars plot that Paolini so liberally borrowed from. Granted, I've heard that Lucas himself stole the plot from Japanese film, but that doesn't make the story any less predictable a second (or third) time around.

Jenelle Oddly enough... now I actually want to read the rest of the series (the second book was gifted to me six years ago and I never could get up the motivation to want to read it), but I do love Star Wars, and finding the similarities will be fun. :)

Robert Wright The similarities are not just directly to Star Wars; it's how the hero's journey unfolds in countless tales.

See: The Hero With a Thousand Faces

Lucas has openly acknowledged Campbell's influence on his work; I would not be surprised if Paolini was familiar with this basic source material.

I would actually be surprised if Paolini was familiar with this before he started writing the first book. He was, what? 15 or 16 years old at the time?
