The good news for nonbelievers is that, for the first time ever, more than half the American population would vote for a qualified, open atheist for president. A recent Gallup poll shows that 54 percent of Americans would not consider a candidate’s atheism to be a disqualification for holding the nation’s highest office.

Jimmy I find that high a number kind of hard to believe. But we all contribute to the rise by expressing our belief system and leading good lives. I'm never ashamed to tell people I'm an atheist.

Betsy I think they believe that they wouldn't disqualify someone because s/he's an atheist. But I suspect when it actually comes to voting it might be a different story. They want to believe that they are impartial but they still have a visceral, emotional reaction against atheism.

Jimmy I had woman tell me recently she wouldn't vote for Obama because he "wasn't religious enough."
