(I'm rather new here, so I'm not sure if this has been talked about before. I didn't see anything that sounded the same after searching discussion threads.)
I'm curious about something, and I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this.
Looking at reviews of books that Goodreads recommends to me, I've seen more than a few that say something along the lines of "this book is like this tv show". I've had people I know make a few suggestions to me regarding things to read by saying "oh, it's just like this thing I know you like, but set in a different world". Even right now, there are a few discussion topics in the Leviathan Wakes that talk about its similarities between it and a tv show and a role-playing game.
My question is what triggers these connections for you?
For me, I think at least part of it has to be the mood of the story. Which I don't know if alot of people take into account when making these comparisons. I was recommended Lies of Locke Lamora by someone saying "it's like Ocean's Eleven in a fantasy setting". I never saw the original film, but Lamora felt closer to The Godfather than to the comedy staring George Clooney. The only connection I can see between Firefly and Leviathan Wakes is that you could probably use some of the same cast.
What is the thing in a book that triggers a connection to another book/television show/movie/game for you?
