Not to sound rude, but the best way to make friends on Goodreads (author, reader or both) is to actually engage in discussions and get to know the people.

I usually won't add anyone who I can't place and who I don't have any connection with (other than a general love for books, which is kind of granted in a place like a website dedicated to books).
