Is paranormal the priority when writing a paranornal romance book?

A story needs to hook me fairly quickly. I might not care that much about the character, but if the world is interesting, that can carry me deeper into it with no problem. A mystery, whatever its nature, is often a better way to do that. Characters that appeal to my daughter often don't to me & vice versa.

I have found that getting into the paranormal (or at least hinting at it early on) is really important to get the RIGHT reader. I would definitely include it in a query AND in a book synopsis...

Otherwise, you end up with a reader who does not like paranormal giving you a bad review because all of a sudden - there is a vampire (and they weren't expecting it).

Vice Versa - you want to attract the paranormal reader and convince them to stay with you through character development. So, I think you need to make a good promise that you'll deliver on the paranormal part too (again with some hints, or at least a glimpse of the paranormal in the beginning). Paranormal readers are pretty loyal, so I'd advertise to them clearly.
