Just found this podcast on 5by5. It's the anti-Sword and Laser. Multiple hosts. Long form, rambling, unbridled. Basically, friends chatting about things they love and hate.
Been listening to it all weekend and it is pretty great.

Kate O'Hanlon (kateohanlon) | 778 comments I really like The Incomparable for the same reason as you the long rambliness especially, but there's space in my heart (and my phone's sd card) for both podcasts.

Tamahome | 7230 comments But they don't always talk about sf&f books...

Kim | 477 comments I don't think I'd enjoy a long, rambling podcast. I don't listen to many but I like the way T&V do theirs.

terpkristin | 4407 comments Interesting, I'll give it a go. Not that I dislike the S&L podcast, but sometimes I do want a little more book discussion. I can sometimes handle long, rambling podcasts and sometimes not, depends on the hosts and the topic.

Aloha | 919 comments Thanks. I'll try it, although I'm having a hard time keeping up with the podcasts I'm already subscribed to.

David Sven (gorro) | 1582 comments Had a listen. Its ok but the topics are wide so I couldn't listen to every episode - Ep 97 starts of talking about Futurama which I'm not interested in but the one before starts off with the Hugo awards and GRRM's inclusion so that was interesting. And the voices started putting me to sleep. T & V seem to project themselves better - maybe they took lessons or something.

Lepton | 176 comments First episode that I listened to was Episode 96, in which they discussed the Hugo nominees. I thought that was very good.
Listening now to an episode about Embassytown and Mieville in general.

Duncan (3dmonkey) | 33 comments I like their discussion a lot, it's pretty in-depth, and they're very affable. But they're pretty bad at spoiler warnings, you have either have read the book or not care. I had to skip past their whole discussion of Leviathan Wakes.

Casey | 654 comments I've listened to a fair share of their podcasts and while some are pretty good, multiple books discussed in a single show and suggestions for the audience, after a while some of the hosts kind of come across smug and condescending.

The Sword and Laser is inclusive while The Incomparable is more exclusive.

I'd much rather sit down with T & V over a drink and talk books, authors and writing than anyone on The Incomparable.

Rasnac | 336 comments I'm sure they are good and all, but until they interview G.R.R.Martin in their podcast; they are not in the same league with S&L. Plus, S&L has a cybernatic dragon! :DD

message 12: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7230 comments They certainly don't seem to be worried about offending any possible future guest writers.

P. Aaron Potter (paaronpotter) | 585 comments Sounds to me like we need to settle this the old fashioned way: thunderdome. Two casts enter. One cast leaves.

Due to The Incomparable large rotating cast I'd be worried T&V would get trounced by sheer numbers.

message 15: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7230 comments Hah. Andy Ihnatko is a regular on the podcast.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments If you want long and rambling, you should try SFF Audio!

Hahahaha.

I think there is room for everyone in podcast world.

That wasn't an inflammatory post title at all, Lepton.

Said it once, I'll say it again... the podcasting world is big enough for many shows on the same subject matter, everyone has their own favorites.

message 18: by Lepton (new)

Lepton | 176 comments Oooooh, but I like being inflammatory.

I fixed it.

Best friends forever?

Well, you don't have to name it THAT, either!! I <3 you.

message 20: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7230 comments Andy Ihnatko really lays into The Avengers movie in the Avengers episode. They seem to be recording the podcast with a live chat lately. The Pablo Bacigalupi YA novels episode was pretty good, tho spoilerific. They even have a Goodreads group, but it doesn't look that active.

message 21: by Poly (new)

Poly (xenphilos) I liked the Futurama episode, but the Hugo episode where the Feed/Deadline and Ready Player One, both of which I enjoyed, are disliked by most of the guests was really weird to listen to.

:/

Tamahome | 7230 comments They're having a live stream at 10 pm est tonight with an irc chat. I'm gonna check it out. The topic is sf summer reads.
