LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments Cannot believe June is done, and off we go into July!! Got 11 books read this month, not bad if I do say so myself. Enjoyed the 1st 2 of the Hunger Games series. Didn't think I would as it is not my genre, but I did enjoy them. Will start the 3rd one tomorrow.
Other notables would be Grishom's Calico Joe and Jeff Shelby's Drift Away. So glad Noah is back!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Good month, Liz! I wish I was up to 55 books read.
I am still hoping for one more book completed today but won't complain by starting July off with it. I read an interesting article yesterday about the information publishers and authors could glean from ereaders. Will have to find and post it. The gist of my point was that it said the average reader completed reading the third Hunger Ganes book in seven hours and that was quoted as 57 pages an hour. DD was horrified that someone would know that. (big brother) but I thought the data was fascinating!

message 3: by LizH (new)

LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments That is very interesting and a little disturbing as I exclusively read with my Kindle. No actual books for me, all electronics, all the time, lol!

Marcy | 865 comments Great month, Liz. I have Calico Joe on my TBR list. Ann, the data mining that is possible these days is truly amazing. Like your DD, I'm not really comfortable with it, but you're right it is fascinating!

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Marcy - it truly is fascinating. Found the article...
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001...
from the article:
By ALEXANDRA ALTER
It takes the average reader just seven hours to read the final book in Suzanne Collins's "Hunger Games" trilogy on the Kobo e-reader—about 57 pages an hour. Nearly 18,000 Kindle readers have highlighted the same line from the second book in the series: "Because sometimes things happen to people and they're not equipped to deal with them." And on Barnes & Noble's Nook, the first thing that most readers do upon finishing the first "Hunger Games" book is to download the next one.
The major new players in e-book publishing—Amazon, Apple and Google—can easily track how far readers are getting in books, how long they spend reading them and which search terms they use to find books. Book apps for tablets like the iPad, Kindle Fire and Nook record how many times readers open the app and how much time they spend reading. Retailers and some publishers are beginning to sift through the data, gaining unprecedented insight into how people engage with books.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Sorry to have hijacked your monthly reads thread Liz!
from the article - now this quote seems just silly
"Jim Hilt, the company's vice president of e-books, says the company is starting to share their insights with publishers to help them create books that better hold people's attention."
they don't need ebooks data mining to tell them that!

message 8: by LizH (new)

LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments I don't mind the hijacking...especially in a topic like this!

message 9: by LizH (new)

LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments Dan, I will start Mockingjay tomorrow since I can download it free from amazon, and add to their data mining, LOL!!

message 10: by Dan in AZ (new)

Dan in AZ | 2960 comments After reading the article about the data mining, I'm tenpted to do something to throw them off like people used to do to Neilson by leaving their TV on even when they weren't watching it. And the data I'd like them to mine is how ofter I have to charge my Kindle Fire.

Dan, I would like to see you throw them off by downloading the Fifty Shades of Grey series.

SPEW!! LOL

message 14: by Melodie (new)

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments Good month, Liz! I have recommended THE HUNGER GAMES trilogy to SO many people who would never have considered it and then they've loved the books. Great age range and genre crossing books! I'm a bit bothered about all the info they are getting about us with these electronic readers, too. The main thing they must getting about me is how cheap I am when it comes to electronic reading! Most of what is on my Fire was free and nothing was over $2.99, and I think I've only spent that much on 3 or 4 books!

message 15: by LizH (new)

LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments Melodie: I wish I could be that frugal, but I really can't do regular books any more, it is strictly Kindle for me.

message 16: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Dan. As always your witty posts in response to friendly banter from Carol make me smile, this time, like Melodie, I needed a spew alert!
I love this group!

I just can't bring myself to pay pretty much the same for an electronic book that I would pay for a "paper & ink" one, when I have absolutely nothing tangible to show for my money with the electronic one. I turn the "real" books back around on eBay when I'm done with them and make most of my money back. So I read them for very little and turn around and spend the money on more books!

I agree with you about e-book pricing, Melodie. I'm almost always either reading library books, free Kindle books or equally free review e-books. I have tons of print books at home that I bought, so I'm doing very little of that now. There's no room in my budget or my apartment for more print books and I don't want to pay the publisher's list prices for e-books. If I pay for an e-book it's going to be fairly low priced.

message 19: by Ann (new)

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments I have to really want an ebook to pay for it. I have so many free or 99 cent books and access to the Overdrive catalog from my library that it just seems silly to pay for a Kindle title very often if more than $2.99 I will though, the convenience of reading that way is simply worth it sometimes

Well, there is The Autobiography of Mark Twainand other such tomes which is hard to transport home from the library in print. That's probably worth paying for in the e-version. Though I haven't done it yet. I don't have the time for BFBs.

Now that I've discovered the library ebook collection it will be even more rare for me to buy an e-book. My audible dot com account is where I spend my money on books. The only thing about the library collection is that almost none of them are immediately available so I have to stack up my hold list, and then they only last for two weeks so I have to resort to subterfuge to keep them on my Kindle past the expiration date.

message 23: by LizH (new)

LizH (liz_h) | 955 comments Overdrive books have helped me considerably. I think the last 15 of 20 I read were from the library. There are certain authors that I must read as soon as the book comes out like Nora Roberts/JD Robb, John Hart, Karin Slaughter and I know I pay even more but I am an immediate gratification girl and try to deny myself very little. Life is too short, although I do not have an Ipad yet...

Donnajo | 4354 comments Liz, I'm thinking the same where did June go. Can't believe july is here. well maybe I can believe it with the heat we are getting and going back and forth to the shore (did I mention it's a home weekend and 4th this year don't ask I so can't wait until friday). the bookstore at the shore's book contest (which I came in 2nd last year) started today so need to get my speed genes moving on reading they been slowing down lately. You have a great group of books finished. I have the grisham for nook to be downloaded when I'm ready.
I just have to say the nook was the best thing I bought. still thinking about a new one being my weight loss goal. It has saved me alot of money if anything even though I'm still reading DT books the piles haven't been going down that must can't understand that but guess I'm reading more on the nook than regular books. hope to get in a few of those the next few months while the contest is going on. too many group reads going and again have too many books going at the same time so it takes longer to finish anything.
Ann, interesting article. sometimes when I'm reading I'll look at the clock and see how much I read in an hour. but haven't done it in awhile. need to see how many pages I do and post it if I remember. maybe do both a DT book and one on the nook it would be a good test to see the difference.
I also have to say when I do get over here to do catch up with all unread posts I know I always LOL or leave with a smile.
I still haven't tried library books on the nook. maybe one of these days I'll give it a try.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Carol: I have figured out with even my Fire that if I don't close the book and do something else on it, the library loans for books stick past the due date. Close the book and they go poof.
Overdrive for my library offers a choice of a one, two or three week borrowing window. I always do the three week. I can always mange my Kindle from Amazon and return one I finish before the due date.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16928 comments Liz: I have done the same with the new Stephen King books and others. Criminal from Karin Slaughter will probably go that way too. I would have bought both in hardback on release date anyway so am not really spending more than in years past and books that DD will also read are good to go ahead and buy, she uses my Kindle account.

For me it's connecting to WiFI. As long as I don' do that I can keep the Kindle loan as long as I want. Makes it dicey when a new book comes in, though!!!
