I read this book a couple years ago after I found it at the library. All I can remember is that the book switched between family members as their family falls apart. The wife/mother is a marine biologist. At one point I seem to remember her taking an inappropriate smoke break with a coworker. The husband passes out when he see's clouds...

I think the cover had a light silhouette of a whale and some other objects.
