The Many Shades of Similarities between ‘Twilight’ and ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

true , so hmmm so no further explanations hahahahha ..

I agree!

LOL, I was JUST about to post that they both had hugely annoying heroines. Though I swear, Bella makes Anna look like a Rhode's scholar.

Honestly? Just about every book I've read I can relate to another story I've read. Success breeds success..thats what "tropes" are all about. Every genre will share similar characterizations simply because authors get ideas on what works from the success of other books. No stopping it and I wouldn't even care to try.
If this author is reaping bennies from anything its the fact that women just WANTED another series to glom onto, were hungry for it and ate it up in the aftermath of Twilight.

I don't think about it as something that makes you smarter. Books are for most readers, a fun thing. And honestly, people telling you it's all about the hefty stuff in the book, but really, for most of the readers, it's because of the relationship. The way he's so fluffed up and even then they love each other deeply. Not really stuff to experience in real life, I don't think anyone would meet a guy like that, but the relationship is endearing, and therefor it's a good read, for fun.

When people allege that EL James "copied" Twilight, they may not realize that this was deliberately done for the original fan fiction readers (and for the writer's personal enjoyment as a fan).
Fan fiction writers deliberately mimic the original story and characters with the goal of cleverly making some interesting new twists on the plot and characters. Fan fiction readers look for and enjoy recognizing the "new" and "old" characters with similar characteristics in "new" and "old" contexts and scenes. For some fan fict writers, it is actually a challenge and a goal to incorporate as many characters with similar characteristics and scenes as possible - yet create a whole new story. Fans love this.
MoTu (aka 50 Shades) was wildly popular in the Twilight Fan Fiction community as it was very erotic, more well developed, and completely different from other works of that time. Fans also loved being able to give the author feedback and even suggest plot changes as it was developed live.
The fan fiction readers involvement is one aspect of fan fiction environment that allowed fan fiction writers to build a core of very devoted readers - and test market their stories.
After 50 Shades (aka MoTu) was pulled to publish, many other fan fiction writers (not just of Twilight - though most were) started pulling to pub as well.
If you check the book lists for Former Fan Fiction you will find many, many best selling former Twilight Fan fictions since 50 Shades hit the shelves. Almost all these fan fictions are in the Romance Genre but subgenre's vary wildly from sci fi to horror to historical and contemporary. Plots and themes are all over the place. From young love angst to serious tales of homelessness and human trafficking. Most of the popular romance fan fictions have erotica, though many do not.
I personally loved MoTu as a fan fiction. I read Twilight due to my teens and then found out there was some adult versions on the Fanfiction.net years ago and started reading them just for fun and entertainment (as another reader points out Twilight after all was a YA book and rather tame).
As an independent publication, 50 Shades disappointed me to some degree as I expected EL James to completely rework some of it - not just change the names. Frankly, some of the character behaviors and characteristics make little sense out of the "Twilight" context. On the other hand, I understand that given a guaranteed sales base of the former fan fiction fans like myself, changing it significantly would have risked making them unhappy.

I agree. I am seeking primarily entertainment in my romance reading. I have some personal likes and dislikes regarding what makes good entertainment. I love a good redemption story and to me 50 Shades is a redemption story. (view spoiler) . You can not read just the 1st book and even get the real gist of the story. So much of the early PR was done by people who didn't even read it. It is not actually a pro-BDSM book (kinky and smutty yes but not pro-BDSM per see). Some may even view it as an anti-BDSM book -when all is said and done.

Great list! Thanks! I caught many but missed so many others... As a fan fict., I am amazed and impressed at ALL the tie ins. Wow.
Would love for you to revise the list sometime to incorporate the other ones people have suggested.
The HUGE number of tie ins, with the completely new story that is FSoG (formerly MoTu), is why I think EL James wrote one of the best fan fiction stories I have ever read. (And I have read a lot of them - even dating back to Star Trek!)
For "true" fans of a book, who attempt to write a fan fiction story, it the challenge and their goal to incorporate as much as possible of the original work (character names and characteristics, themes, actions, dialogue, etc.) - yet create a whole new story from their own minds and prose.
Fans of the original work, like myself, absolutely love this in a fan fiction!
And, just as a well done satire and parody takes work and talent, so too does a well done fan fiction story.
I think people really miss that aspect of the development of this story and just how creative EL James was.
As a romance fan fiction writer, in my opinion, EL James was absolute genius.
She also showed some major talent as a romance writer. Her story had almost every pop romance trope I can think of from conventional romance stories along with incorporating some of the hot trends from the underground erotica e-pubs such as BDSM and explicit sex scenes with toys.
She mixed it all up, made sense of it, and created a completely new story. (Because realistically, there is little new under the sun except in fantasy, sci. fi., and maybe historical fiction. So most contemporary romance is about how one perceives things through one own unique lens or about how one remixes and delivers a unique view.)
EL James was also a smart business woman. As someone who had an exposure to editing and publications and was encouraged by friends, launched her own e-pub and forged her own way to mainstream fiction.
There are a some other Twilight fan ficts that I and many fans loved too that have since been published. Regardless how some fans and fan fict. writers may feel about her success, I am personally grateful to EL James for paving the way for them to be pub'ed as well.
The "unique mix" that is FSoG is obviously unique enough and successful enough that it has launched its own pop culture craze and an upcoming movie.
Of course if you hated Twilight, especially the character types, main tropes, simple prose style, and theme, you will likely hate FSoG too.
BUT as FSoG is a completely new story, the other way around is not an absolute given. Some Twilight fans hate FSoG and some FSoG fans hate Twilight.
Given how extremely creative EL James was with her fan fiction, I have no doubt that she can and would be able to deliver more of FSoG or something completely different. Maybe she will do so in the distant future... Though I am sure she will think twice, given the extreme scrutiny she would be under.

Since we're listing similarities, did anyone mention their affliction for the meadow?

Do you mean their affection (VS affliction) for the meadow? Remember that in Twilight. Where was that in FSoG? It has been a while so maybe I have just forgotten...

Agree 100% Completely just a fantasy romance read with a nice redemption love plot.

yes, you nailed it.

ROTFLMAOF. Yes, well at least Anna is a college grad, Bella is in HS, LOL.

Would you care to specify? Just curious."
I felt the whole story was one big plot hole. I found it ridiculous that a woman would allow a man to dictate her entire life, down to what she ate when she slept and how/if she exercised; all to be with a man who won't let you touch him for a good lay.
Self respect...its a good thing.

When they went flying in the first book, did they land in a meadow? I don't remember. There is definitely a meadow in the last book. They choose their new home because of the view of the meadow from one of the rooms and have a family picnic there at the end.

Ah, yes. Thanks, I forgot that already. So yes, one more tie to add to the list...

I mean let see:
Twilight - a teen romance book that contain well mostly a lot of talking
50 shades - an erotic book that contain rough sex
Twilight - a fiction with vampires and werewolf
50 shades - non fiction with people having rough sex
Twilight - first three books mostly kissing
50 shades - first book rough sex
Twilight - main guy character is mostly gentle and Virgin? Lol who's afraid to touch the girl
50 shades - a man whore with a perverse nature who wants her to sing a sex contract?!
Lol I can keep going but you get the picture, however after reading some comments I guess the similarity of the characters are very well established.
I still think they are so far apart it's like compering a children book to...well what ever 50 shades of grey is.

Well... it's a known fact that 50 Shades is a parody of Twilight.

Ok, I admit I didn't know that, i just googled it and that's just crazy lol
I'm a twilight fan all the way... Ah is the world coming to an end?
I didn't like 50 shades of grey to say the least

Uhm, 50 Shades is not non fiction, it's fiction. Unless EL James based it all on someone from real life. That would be........weird. Or creepy, depending on how you look at it.
Also does anyone else realize that the "contract" is pointless and ineffectual? I mean, he wants her to sign it because.......privacy? At least that's what I can remember. Been a while since I read 50 Shades.
Who the hell would sign a privacy clause without a giant payoff of some kind? Or is the payoff sex?
Hmmm.

I think he made her sign a privacy contract and then to sign some sort of a sex weird fetish contract. Which in the end she didn't... I mean who would?

Oh, well then that's pretty stupid. She could have just not signed it and gone public with the info anyway. Contracts don't have to be signed, you'd be a fool to sign a privacy contract without asking for something in return.
True, I certainly wouldn't sign a sex fetish contract. Weird indeed.

While definitely kinky, in some ways, 50 Shades could be viewed as anti-hardcore BDSM. The heroine rejects the heroes controlling behaviors and his BDSM more pain specific predilections.

But she wasn't his employee. Was she? Not that I can remember. Which again, makes the "non disclosure" contract stupid and ineffectual.

But she wasn't his employee. Was she? Not that I can remember. Which again, makes the "non disclosure" contract stupid and ineffectual. "
She wasn't his employee no. But the NDA was separate from the sex contract. Since the NDA can be enforced I think. Since it's to protect his dirty laundry hurting his public image. That one was kind of the mandatory one, otherwise he wouldn't discuss things in too much more detail with her.
Where as the sex one can't be enforced, he even said he couldn't do anything if she didn't do some of the agreed upon sex contract things. It was more to set the boundaries, to know what she would be okay with him doing or at least trying and what her hard limits were

That still doesn't make the contract any less pointless, because unless she agreed to the NDA, she could technically still yell to the world all about his dirty laundry and he couldn't stop her. And if the NDA is not a part of her employee obligations (if she had any) or indeed separate to their little "Sex Contract" then Christian can't do a damn thing about the NDA or stop her from telling the world. As it's against the law (as far as I know) to coerce or force someone into signing any form of legal contract NDA or otherwise. Even employers can't force their employees to sign anything against their wishes.
The NDA in this whole thing really boils down to Christian trying to make Anna pinkie promise not to tell anyone his secrets. Now if he had just up and told her to do that as a favor, then I wouldn't have a problem with it. As that's normally how people act (but I suppose Chris isn't normal?)
But a contract stipulating a Non Disclosure thing seems a tad........odd.
