Rip off? How is it a rip off? The author clearly stated that this was in fact a pa-ro-dy of 'Twilight'?
Yeah I got the same exact similarities :)

Did she really? It was fanfic yeah, but I'm not sure I've heard EL James acknowledge that her work is a parody of twilight. From what I gather she's pedaling 50 shades as her own original work "inspired" by twilight.

Also, I don’t think people understand what parody means, it is when you make fun of original work with your own. This book was more like a homage to twilight, not a parody.

SPOILER ARLERT: BE WARNED
Characters: the same
Girls: long bro..."
Not to mention, there is now speculation of a book coming out in "Christian's point of view." IE: Midnight Sun

SPOILER ARLERT: BE WARNED
Characters: the same..."
yup exactly, im wondering if she's gonna have someone leak it as well then postpone releasing it to get the hype up about it make everyone want to read it even more (like midnight sun)

Birthdays of both main female characters (bella/anastasia) lies in september.....13 september....10 september.
Both heroes have to prctice self control....though in different areas...but still.
Then both girls are unaware of their beauty and male attraction towards them.
Girls in habit of pulling stupid and dangerous stunts....
Main couple lost in their personal bubble most of the time....
ADOPTED CHILDREN....
And I could just go on.... (sigh)

Just pointed the similarities....
I did like the book...And I would love to read it from Christian's point of view as much as I would love to read Twilight from Edward's point of view....
What everyone is saying is maybe it would have been even better if EL James had kept the characters a bit more original....

I didn't say Midnight Sun was released. I said it was "SPECULATION" of a book written in Christian's point of view, just like Midnight Sun was to be written in Edward's point of view.It was leaked before it was finished, so Stephanie Meyer didn't release it. This thread is about the "SIMILARITIES" between the two series, and no one said it was "copying." I am not sure why you would come in and call everyone "Haters." A little reading comprehension goes a long way.

EL James should've just started from scratch IMO. But then again, maybe it wouldn't had have as much success as it did without the twilight connection, who knows.

Anyway, romances tend to be fairly similar to each other in many ways. I believe there's enough of a divide that 50 Shades can stand on its own.

Ana/Bella

Kate/Rosalie
Mia/Alice
Tanya/Elena
Grace/Esme

Elliot/Emmett

Actually, it's Irina/Elena (but Tanya's a pretty close guess, both blonde and part of the denali clan) and Leila/Victoria (James was a stalker too though).
I'm assuming you compiled a list without reading the fanfiction version? Bravo. Nice catch.

How many of you KNEW this fact eh?
or is it just a jump on the book bashing train kinda thing?

How many of you KNEW this fact eh?
or is it just a jump on the book bashing train..."
I knew it. It is the awful repetition of the same key phrases over and over and over coupled with the immature dialog of 2 characters who are supposed to be intelligent and educated got to me more than the rip off.

Most Twilight fans, read this then bash because they KNEW this fact, and most twilight fans read and then bash, cus they want to jump on the band wagon and they don't know anything about it.
Stephany meyer wasn't the first person to write about Vampires, perhaps we should all jump on a bang wagon and start bashing her for stealing someone else's idea!

it's not the ideas, it's the characters.

I meant the fanfic version though, Master of the Universe (now 50 shades). Because people typically cast Tanya as any of Edward's ex-lovers but in the fanfic it was Irina (now Elena).

The plots may be different but EL James "borrowed" heavily from the original books, mostly from the characterizations.
When you write fanfic, you already have characters, relationship dynamics, plots and themes to work with. She did not write the fanfic (MOTU) completely independent from twilight. She wrote it with twilight as a base.

Just the essence of a fanfic - using another author's characters and scenarios - is a ripoff, especially when the fanfic writer publishes it as original work. You cannot ignore the fact that the entire work was fully a fanfic - meaning Christian was Edward and Ana was Bella. To write the fanfic, she had the characterization and some of the situations in mind as she was writing. I didn't have to dig too hard to notice the similarities. You are choosing to ignore them to suit your argument. On her dedication page she even eludes to her source, so it really can't be ignored.

Both Bella and Ana were hesitant to get married. Had to be asked numerous times before they agreed.
Both had oval shaped engagement rings
Both had short engagements
Married at Edward/Christian's parents house

There's no need to come on here, and start a bash the book/author band wagon!
This is a site, wehre the MAJORITY of the users APPRECIATE a book like this, and all books for that matter. Take the hate somewhere else.

Well technically Fifty Shades was originally Twilight fanfiction. Can't deny the connection.

Naty I loved your post. You are so right and I feel the same way...

There’s also nothing wong with fan-ficiton, so I don’t understand why people get so offensive that people say fsog is twilight’s adult fan fiction. Writers love to write fan fiction, I’ve done it myself, to try and hold on to the characters a bit longer because as you’re not ready to say good-bye, I know many other writers have done, it just so happen E.L James has managed to publish hers. E.L James couldn’t say good-bye to twilight and so made her version of the story. Plus, readers love to read fan fiction. There is nothing wrong with that. To act like fsog is some sacred book and declare it’s not fan fiction is just silly in my opinion.
I think people who don’t write or read or even understand fan-fiction are the type of people who can’t understand that FSOG is fan-fiction and just an adult twilight.

This isn't a fan club site, this is a review site for good and bad opinions. If you just want to hear good things I'm sure you could go somewhere else yourself. I don' understand this mentality of only writing good things on a review site.

I didn't hate or love FSOG, but I know I didn't join a group dedicated to it.

-play piano
-the girl (anna/bella) have more confidence in the guy (christian/edward) then they themselves do
-both guy are scared they are going to hurt the girl
-both guys want marriage
-both guys think the girl is too young
